Dan Winter's House

On a lovely August evening some Sisters of Saintfield United Guiding
Star WLOL 67 visited Dan Winter’s Cottage, the birthplace of
Orangeism, in Loughgall. The Sisters were made very welcome by Mrs.
Hilda Winter who went on to give the Sisters a tour of the cottage
explaining some of the artifacts then sitting with them to share
stories of the cottage and explaining the run up to the Battle of the
Diamond and how Orange Lodges were formed afterwards. Sisters
went on to have a lovely supper, supplied by Mrs Winter and of course
some of her legendary apple tart. The lodge also got a great welcome
from Betty, Mrs Winter’s ‘Orange Cat’.

Also receiving their 70 year bar and certificate were Bro Cecil McMullan and Bro Lexie Burrows. Bro Bobby Cairns also received his 50 year Jewel and certificate.

Worthy President Sister Norma Gillespie and Worthy Vice President Sister Kelly Wylie were delighted to visit Dan Winters Cottage, Loughgall, where the Loyal Daughters of Sloans JWLOL 35 presented a cheque for £700 to Macmillan Cancer Support following their recent fundraising efforts.

This fantastic contribution reflects the generosity and community spirit of the lodge. Well done to all involved in organising and supporting such a worthwhile cause.

The lodge also marked the occasion by warmly welcoming a new member – we wish her every happiness as part of the lodge.

A wonderful achievement all round 👏

Here are Pam & Craig Greenway from Texas, USA. They are descendants of the Winter family, some of whom went to Canada in 1837. The family were recorded in a Canadian Journal as Farmers, Cloth Weavers, of the Quaker Faith and Orangemen.
It was lovely to meet you both and chat about our shared history.

Dan Winter's House was recently honoured to receive such a generous donation of £1000 from Armagh Orange Hall & Friends of Armagh District LOL No.5 towards the thatching of the cottage and outbuilding.
