Today, we are featuring the work of woodturner, Paul Hannaby of Paul Hannaby Creative Woodturning

Paul produces a wide range of turned items mainly from wood but also incorporating other materials such as stone, metals, resin and paint which are intended to enhance the beauty of the wood. Included in the range of turned wood produced by Paul are vases, hollow forms, goblets, natural edge and burr bowls, platters and pens.

He likes to work with local woods and will often start with a piece of trunk or branch in its raw form and will control the whole process from tree to table.

Paul's work can be found on the first floor of our gallery.

Today we are showcasing the work of Annie Kemp, Glass Artist.

Annie has a background in fine art, and taught for many years both children and adults. She now works in both stained glass and fused glass, using mark-making techniques and glass painting to create the themes of her individual pieces.

Her work is always varied, always colourful, and always stunning.

Come and see for yourself; Annie's work can be found on the ground floor of the gallery.

Did you know that we also run workshops at our gallery? For example, this is the work of our 'Crafty Frogs', our Friday morning textiles workshop. This beautiful cushion cover, and the curtain which covers the upstairs doorway into our workshop space are collaborative creations made by the students under the instruction of our very own textile artist, Penny Turnbull.

Fancy it? Well, you don't even need to book! Just drop in on a Friday morning, 11- 1pm and get stitching! Cost is just £5 for the session.

Let's talk about red:

❤️ According to numerous scientific studies on the effect of colour, red increases our appetites, pulse rate, muscle strength and causes an adrenalin rush.
❤️In 2012, a study was published in the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research which advised waitresses to wear red. Why? Because it increased the tips given by male patrons by up to 26% (there was no such effect on female diners...)
❤️Red is strongly associated with power: the red dye cochineal was reserved for Roman generals and of course kings and cardinals have always had a penchant for luxurious red clothes.

All we know is that red also produces stunning art work, as these pictures from Susan Smith (textile artist), Jude Lowery (artist) and Becci Meakins (fused glass) show.

Here we have artwork by mixed-media artist, David Haswell.

David creates highly textured paintings showing drama and contrast, bordering on the abstract. He does this through a multi-layered approach involving mixed media applied with a palette knife and overlaid with highly pigmented pure watercolours from Italy.

His work is very popular and it's easy to see why!

Today, we are going to introduce you to mixed media artist, Sarah Goodgame.

Sarah is a mixed media artist, living and working in Abergavenny. She likes to combine different materials to get interesting and unexpected outcomes in her work.

She takes inspiration from her travels, painting the landscapes of Monmouthshire and the Black Mountains, to the reedbeds of Norfolk.

Sarah caters for all budgets and tastes so come and see, and lose yourself in a beautiful landscape.

Today, we are showcasing the work of Bronwen Thomas, felt-maker.

Bronwen has been felt-making for 15 years now, and her experience certainly shows in her gorgeous work. She uses the wet-felting technique in both 2D and 3D work. Her feltwork is richly coloured and multi-textured using primarily merino wool with silks, and many other types of yarns and fabrics.

Bronwen makes a selection of bags, scarves, and wall-art, amongst other things. What they all have in common is how beautiful and unique they all are.
