The Country Kitchen - La Cuisine du Pays

The Country Kitchen - La Cuisine du Pays Jams, marmalades and chutneys, cakes and biscuits - all home-made in small batches.

I make jam, marmalade and chutney to traditional recipes in small batches by hand - just like our grandmothers used to. In England we grew loads of fruit to use in my jams and we're hoping to carry on this tradition in France as much as possible. The cakes and biscuits are made with the same principles - hand-made in small batches, mostly to traditional recipes. I add no preservatives or artificia

l flavourings to what I make and in general the only salt I use is in some of the chutneys, so if you have to have a low-salt diet, you have no worries eating what I make.

With the latest lockdown looming, tomorrow and Saturday will be good days to come and buy some of my goodies to help see you through.
I have soft, rich chocolate brownies with chocolate chips and crunchy walnut pieces.
I have traditional sweet scones and strawberry jam (other flavours are available).
I have delicious Bakewell-style tart with rich butter pastry spread with home-made raspberry & redcurrant jam, topped with almond flavoured sponge.
I have the lightest, softest lemon drizzle cake you will ever have eaten.
Last but definitely not least, I have 2 very special Easter Simnel cakes and if you have never tried these, you really need to. A light, almond-flavoured fruit cake is baked with a centre layer of marzipan then topped with another layer of marzipan decorated with 11 marzipan balls, one ball for each of the Apostles except Judas. This is then toasted. Believe me, it is unusual but delicious.
All these are sold by the slice although if you would like a whole Simnel cake, then you can have one.
And don't forget I always have jams, marmalade, sauces and chutney and everything is home-made by myself so I know what goes in to each item.
Here are the two Simnel cakes, just ready for tomorrow at Melle and Chef Boutonne on Saturday

This weekend will be my first at the markets since Christmas. The weather's looking up so I'm hoping it will be busy.
What am I planning on making? Imagine these ........
Lemon drizzle, definitely. Soft, light and really lemony.
Chocolate walnut brownies? Absolutely. Soft and rich with chunks of chocolate and walnuts.
Millionaires shortcake, although they are not that expensive! Butter shortcake and rich, gooey caramel topped with dark chocolate. Who can resist these?
Victoria sponge. Soft and light, filled with home-made jam and vanilla buttercream. Old fashioned it may be but that doesn't stop it being delicious.
Bakewell-style tart. Butter shortcrust pastry spread with home-made jam and an almond flavoured sponge, sprinkled with almonds (but only if I remember them!)
So, are you tempted? Good. That was my intention! You can find me in Melle market, sous Les Halles, on Friday morning and in Chef Boutonne, next to the oyster man, on Saturday. All in dept 79. So come and see me and don't forget I also make jams, chutney, tomato sauce, barbecue sauce and sweet/sour gherkins so if you are denying yourself cake for Lent there are still treats I can sell you.
See you soon

Christmas puddings are now ready and waiting for you on my market stall in Melle this morning and Chef Boutonne tomorrow.

Gluten-free?? I have gluten-free Christmas puddings this year for the first time too.

Come and see what else there is waiting for you today or tomorrow. Look forward to having a chat

Just a note in case anyone is wondering where I am; I hope to restart the markets in March/April, once the weather warms up a little and of course always providing we have our kitchen reinstated, following the fire. Stay warm!!

It's almost December so the cakes and bakes are becoming more festive! This weekend I will have mince pies, shortbread and Rocky Road as well as the usual lemon drizzle cake, caramel shortcake, muffins plus flapjack. There will be Christmas puddings and jars of home-made mincemeat (fat-free, simmered in cider and topped up with Cognac), jars of red onion relish and sweet pickled gherkins to eat with your charcuterie and foie gras as well as the jams and bitter orange marmalade so something for everyone. Come along and see me at Melle, sous les Halles, and in Chef Boutonne next to the oyster man.

23/11/2019

This is an unusual post as normally I only do markets. However this year I will be going with my jams, cakes, Christmas puds, etc to Chez Tante Mabel's Christmas Fair. This is tomorrow, Sunday 24th, from 10 am to 4 pm, at Fondemoulin, close to Pers in dept 79. Do come along and support us all. Paul & Bev hold this every year in aid of local charities

14/11/2019

I've decided this morning I'm not making any comments about the weather!
So - on to the baking - scones, muffins, lemon drizzle, caramel shortcake, jam/buttercream sponge, plus Christmas puddings and mince pies. I will also have mincemeat, cooked in cider then topped up with Cognac, red onion relish and mango chutney plus lots of different, some quite unusual, flavours of jam and some gorgeous Seville orange marmalade. That should be enough to tempt anyone, I would have thought, so do come along to Melle tomorrow, sous les Halles, or to Chef Boutonne, under the covered area beside the oyster man.
I may get a chance to photo some of my bakes later on this morning so keep watching this space .............

Good morning all. Due to a hospital appointment I won't be at Melle market tomorrow but I will be at Chef Boutonne on Saturday. Do come and say 'Hello' and have a look at all I have to sell. There will be scones, caramel shortcake and muffins, Christmas puddings and lots of jams (including some unusual flavours), a couple of chutneys, sweet pickled gherkins, plus quince jellies. See you on Saturday

My OH having a check-up with the surgeon this morning, a month after his knee replacement, meant I couldn't get to the market in Melle today. However I did have to time bake a couple of goodies for tomorrow in Chef Boutonne - take a look here at the scones, chocolate hazelnut muffins and lemon drizzle cake then tell me you don't fancy having some of these with a coffee tomorrow morning! It is supposed to be a nice weekend and today has certainly been glorious; let's hope tomorrow is the same so you have no excuse not to pop in and say 'Hello' or 'Bonjour' if you are so inclined. See you tomorrow

26/09/2019

I'm ready for baking this morning, particularly as the weather isn't wonderful so no gardening. I shall be making scones, lemon drizzle, jam/buttercream sponge, chocolate/hazelnut muffins and caramel shortcake so plenty to choose from. Just come and see me in Melle or Chef Boutonne and I can help you choose - or just buy some of each if you dare!

12/09/2019

Good morning to you all. It's a bit misty here today which means a chilly start but hopefully it will warm up later and be a typical autumn day. I will be doing some different bakes today for the markets - I'm planning on date/walnut cake, chocolate/hazelnut muffins, flapjack, sponge and lemon drizzle. I hope you're tempted and come to see me.

Everything is packed, ready for tomorrow's market at Melle. I baked the usual goodies but the Chelsea buns look particularly good. I'm often torn between wanting to sell all I have made and hoping something is left so I get to eat it!
If I don't see you tomorrow, perhaps you will make it to Chef Boutonne on Saturday.
