Fall-ing into the season with an obligatory pumpkin spice bake. Curl with with a box of these warning spiced pumpkin donut holes. Coated in cinnamon sugar, these tasty morsels are nothing short of addictive. 😋

Back on the rails Making our way back down from the mountains, we took a roughly 3 hour journey from the quiet of Koyasan to the bustling city of Osaka. Heading for the Hills Saying goodbye to Kyoto, we headed out on a bit of a trek to the monastery village of Koyasan, which is nestled within the mountainous Wakayama region. Getting to Koyasan was an adventure in itself! It took about 2 train transfers, a funicular/cable car and a bus to get to where we needed to go, which meant the less luggage we had on hand, the better....

Heading out It was a rainy day in the region, but that didn't stop us from heading out of the bustle of the city to enjoy some nature. Being such a well connected city, it was an easy hour or so journey from where we stayed in Kyoto to get to Arashiyama by train. My travel companion wasn't rain-ready, but thankfully all of the convenience stores offered reasonably priced rain coats and umbrellas....

From Takayama to Kyoto Our journey continues as we take another Shinkansen trip to the historic capitol of Japan - Kyoto. The trip was about three and a half hours long, with a transfer in Nagoya. Shinkansen route from Takayama to Kyoto Like previous train rides, this one also did not disappoint in terms of speed, cleanliness, and scenery. As you can see above, I had to grab a little bento boxed lunch for the ride, which just so happened to be in the shape of Takayama's mascot....

Another Scenic Train Ride You can see from the map below that to take a train from Kanazawa to Takayama, you will need to make a transfer in Toyama - That's at least what we did in order to maintain usage of our National Rail Passes. The roughly three hour journey took us through the hilly Hida region, and with a sunny day ahead of us, it was a nice scenic trip....

Been a bit slow with posts, but not with baking over the holidays. Still thinking about these tried and tested triple oat cookies. We've got rolled oats, steel cut, and oat flour to complete this trifecta of deliciousness. Mixed in some chocolate chunks, and finished off with flaky sea salt, and you will not be able to stop at just one. 😋
