We built this! Right here in Atlantic Canada.
At Mrs. Dunster’s, one of our core values is: “We use our superpowers for good.” Today, we are incredibly proud to share an example of that value in action.
Several years ago, Alex Boyd at Greener Village in Fredericton stepped forward with a bold idea: What if we could build a facility that recovered perishable food by the truckload, triaged it, transformed it into meals and usable portions, and distributed it through New Brunswick’s network of 64 food banks.
The idea was innovative. It was ambitious. And it had never been done before in Canada.
But that is the wonderful thing about stepping forward with a powerful idea: supporters and like-minded people begin stepping forward with you.
Our Co-Owner Blair Hyslop, stepped up to chair the capital campaign that helped bring Alex’s vision to life.
Today, we celebrated the grand opening of Thrive—Canada’s first perishable food recovery centre.
Through an extraordinary capital campaign—and the generosity of more donors, organizations and foundations than we could possibly name here—the campaign raised $8 million and turned that original idea into reality.
Thrive will recover food that might otherwise be wasted, further process it and get it into the hands of people who need it. It is the first facility of its kind in Canada, but we are confident it will not be the last. This is a model that can—and should—be replicated across the country.
Full credit belongs to Alex and the remarkable team at Greener Village, its Board of Directors, the campaign cabinet, and every donor, foundation and supporter who believed in this vision.
Mrs Dunster’s is incredibly proud to have played one small part in a very big—and very determined—effort.
Someone had an idea. Others believed in it. A community rallied around it.
And together, we built this.
We use our superpowers for good—and this is what that looks like.
