I scored a vintage ceramic mixing bowl off marketplace and it’s just like the one my mom has. A wide bowl is a game changer for hand mixing and kneading dough. Mixed up my first dough in it today. Sometimes I let my mixer do the work for me but it’s also very satisfying to do it by hand. It’s also very calming, like kitchen mediation for me. Anyone else feel like that?

So it’s a fun tradition to name your starter because they are a living thing. I had a bunch of names in mind that were puns like Doughana Taurasi after Diana Taurasi from the W because she’s the GOAT and I expect the same of my starter or I liked Doughchii because I’m obsessed with Doechii.

But nothing felt quite right and then it hit me—Rhonda, after my aunt who was known as the best bread maker in our family. She passed in 2016 and is so missed by all of us. I’m hoping her juju will manifest in my starter and we can have many baking days together again.

I’ve been on an adventure with sourdough since late January and this is from a couple weeks into the process when she finally became active and was doubling consistently. I had tried making a starter several years back but I didn’t fully understand the ins and outs of making one from scratch and it failed miserably—my undiagnosed ADHD likely had a hand in its failure as well. 🤣🙃

I was about 8 days into the process when my Mom ended up in hospital on the west coast and naturally I was heading home. My starter was doing good but wasn’t fully active yet so I couldn’t store it in the fridge until I got back as it would have gone bad at that point. So I swaddled it up like a baby, packed up my scale and flour mix for feedings and we hit the road.

Taking care of this starter and the daily feeding process actually helped so much during such a stressful time. It was a simple little ritual that took my mind off of real life for a few minutes a day. Watching it thrive and grow each day was like an instant boost of serotonin too which was a nice bonus. Here she is nice and happy hanging out in my parent’s kitchen. Name to be revealed on another post as this is long enough!

Love a little fresh display at one of my fave spots in town. Happy 5 years to the Bannerfam! Cafe wasn’t officially opened yet in 2019 but it was an exciting time planning things and seeing such a great space and downtown hang come together. Always grateful that I got to be a little part of those exciting times! Still doing a little stock up here and there, so keep your eyes peeled. 🧡
