Hey y'all!

Happy November! Who else can't believe that this year is coming to an end in just six weeks?! I have been trying to lean into the season and take some much-needed rest after an intense and busy summer. Just got back from a prairie weekend with my family and am ready to get baking for you! The inspiration for these pies is coming from my desire for cozy, warming comfort foods. The world is a bit of a heartbreaking place currently... maybe always, but trying to stay hopeful and when that doesn't work I eat my feelings.

Pick up of these delicious lil' pastries will be this Sunday the 19th from 2 pm - 5 pm at True Love Pizza, which is located in the Food Garden. Please place your pie orders through my website http://www.thebutterwitch.ca. Here's what I am cooking up for you this month!

This meat pie came from a delicious noodle dish that my previous boss at Harvest Community Foods in Vancouver makes. I highly recommend you visit them when you're in the big city! It is a hearty savoury dish with a hint of spice from the local fresh ginger and chili oil. I will be using amazing pork from my friends at Matriarch Meats, along with magic local miso aged 2 years from Salt Spring G*ia Foods.

Local Ground Pork, Bok Choy, Onions, Ginger & Garlic. Served with a side of Miso Gravy.

The veggie pie for this month is inspired by all the beautiful root vegetables my friends at Heyday Farm are still growing, and also from my craving for flavourful and warming foods. It will feature more lovely kabocha squash from Hey Squash! and will be brought together by a delightful masala blend from Monsoon Coast & fresh local ginger from DnS Farm.

Local Kabocha Squash, Roasted Root Vegetables, Onions, Ginger, Garlic & Warming Curry Spices. Served with a side of Cilantro & Coconut Chutney.

The fruit pie for November came from me terribly missing summer and all the wonderful things that come with it. I managed to save some gorgeous strawberries from my friends at Heavenly Roots Farm. I can't really believe these will be the last ones I ever get from them, so these hand pies will be extra special. I will roast and stew them with some local honey and they will be served with luscious chocolate dip, because who doesn't love a chocolate covered strawberry?

Hellooo Pie Lovers!

I feel like I just finished my last pie pop-up, but here we are again already! Also how the hell is it October?! I couldn't not whip up some special Thanksgiving pies for y'all to enjoy, as I feel as though this is pie's unofficial holiday! I'm always missing my Gramma's cooking when these big celebrations come around. She is turning 95 in a month and is truly amazing... she'll be making dinner this Sunday complete with turkey, ham & all the fixings! Meat pie for October is inspired by a classic turkey dinner! I am getting a big beautiful bird from Byron Family Farm, which I'll be brining & slow roasting, and then will use all the bones and drippings to make a luscious gravy. I always strive to use the whole animal whenever I can!

Turkey from Byron Family Farm, Creamy Mashed Potatoes from Heyday Farm & Homemade Cranberry sauce. Served with Turkey Gravy ๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿฅ”

Veggie pie this month features some gorgeous winter squashes from a young local farmer and his farm is named Hey Squash, so you know they are going to be good! This lil' pie tastes just like stuffing, except it's all vegetables packaged in a buttery dough.

This month there are two sweet pies available! I am making a classic pumpkin pie, as it seems blasphemous not to, and I'm getting the cutest little pie pumpkins from Byron Family Farm. But full disclosure I really don't like pumpkin pie at all ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Nevertheless the ones I made last year were delicious and these will be too!

Hey There Pie Lovers,

The weekend for the September pie drop has arrived! I am fresh off a pie high from the Fall Fair, where this year I took home the trophy for Best Pastry. I had so much fun attending the fair as a guest for the first time, who knew the zucchini races were such a high-intensity event! I am clinging on to every last remnant of summer, as I am very much not ready for it to be over and these lil' pies will reflect it. Here is what I am cooking up for you this month!

The Meat Pie is inspired by one of my most favourite soups (and I LOVE soup) Tom Kha G*i. This beautiful Thai dish is flavourful, light, & well-balanced, and I plan to recreate it using amazing island ingredients.

Amazing Local Chicken, Mixed Mushrooms, Coconut Milk, Baby Ginger, Red Russian Garlic, Kaffir Lime Leaves, Lemongrass, Hot Peppers & Cilantro. Served with a seasoned Coconut Milk dip. (The final product will only have a hint of spice!)

The Veggie Pie comes from my love of a famous French summer dish, as well as, a fabulous animated movie... it's Ratatouille! It is a magical couple of months when all of these gorgeous vegetables are all in season at the same time. I adore tomatoes, and this is another fun and delicious way to enjoy the last of the local bounty!

Incredible Local Eggplants, Roasted Peppers, Grilled Zucchini, Red Onions, Fennel, Tomatoes, Red Russian Garlic & Herbs. Served with a Herby Tomato sauce.

The Fruit Pie will feature my third favourite fruit, which I got from a lovely local woman who brought back a whole van full of Okanagan fruit for many fortunate islanders! I am going to combine these roasted and stewed beauties with some incredible baby ginger from Foxglove Farm. What says summer more than a delectable juicy peach!

My summer burnout is very real this year... maybe because I just celebrated another turn around the sun, or maybe from having three jobs. My meat pie for August was inspired by me having to return my Fall Fair trophy last week... so scotch eggs have been on my mind! That is what I won a trophy for last year, along with a 1st & 2nd place ribbon for the pies I entered. I was proud of the items I submitted, and am looking forward to entering some more things this year!

Gorgeous Ground Pork from my favourites at Matriarch Meats, cutest lil' Quail Eggs from E and E Farms, Caramelized Onions, Garlic Scapes & Herbs. Served with homemade HP sauce.

This veggie pie came from the abundance of eggplants we have at the farm and Nasu Dengaku is my most favourite way to eat them! We are lucky enough to have magical miso made right here on the island, and you must eat delicious summer corn while you can get it!

Beautiful Grilled Eggplants from Duck Creek Farm, Roasted Corn from Offhand Farm, Traditional Miso from Salt Spring G*ia Foods, Green Onions & Basil. Served with a Miso & Sake dip.

The fruit pie for this month comes from my never-ending love of cherries... as that really signifies summer to me and I think their perfect match is amaretto!

Hope you've been enjoying May so far... it was really starting to feel like summer there for a moment. Just wanted to share a few updates with y'all...

Firstly, I will be selling hand pies at Ruckle Farm this Sunday May 7th during their FREE Farm Day which will feature many fun activities and adorable animals. I will even be using their lamb in my meat pies! Come join us to celebrate all the fabulous aspects of farming from 10am - 3pm!

It has been a minute since I have shared anything here. After a gruelling winter, things have been feeling a bit lighter & brighter these days, and I have some tremendously exciting pie updates to share with y'all!

Firstly, I will be doing an Easter hand pie pop-up this weekend ๐Ÿฐ Pre-ordering is available on my brand new website until Saturday April 8th. Pick up will be on Monday April 10th at beautiful Bullock Lake Farm from 2pm -4pm.
