Moose, Mushrooms and Mud

Moose, Mushrooms and Mud Northern BC Bush Girl getting down with Moose, Mushrooms and Mud. Her products often have blends of herbs, or techniques used from both cultures.

Foraging, fishing, and hunting for sustanance, natural food, skill development, connection to the land, stewardship, heritage and my ancestry. Moose, Mushrooms and Mud is a Wildcrafting business that offers nature and foraging tours as well as Wildcraft workshops based on plants from the Boreal and Montane region. Jen, the owner of Moose, Mushrooms, and Mud, practices and teaches ethical harvesting techniques. She has a motto: “If the lands succeeds, we succeed!”

She also sells Wildcrafted: teas, dried mushrooms, salves, ointments, tinctures, soaps, and even fresh wild edibles to those who want to explore and taste the wild side. As a Metis, she is exploring and learning the old traditional ways from her First Nation ancestors, while learning about the old traditional ways from her European ancestors and trying blend and harmonize the two worlds. More about me: I live in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada. I’m in my early forties, have 2 wonderful teenagers and a great husband. I have many interests, but my main ones are hunting, foraging and fishing. I love the natural world around me. Nature is very inspiring. Nature is very giving too, if you know what you are looking for. I journey throughout the bush all year collecting wild food and medicines. Call me a hunter-gatherer. I am just at the tip of the iceberg of learning about wild foods and medicines. It’s a skill that is developed over time. Not only could the skill come in handy in a post apocalyptic world, I just like the feeling of bringing home wild edibles to the table and fixing boo-boo’s with wild medicine. The skill of Foraging and Wildcrafting can and should apply in our modern day life. If I’m not hunting, fishing or foraging, I’m camping, gardening, cooking, entertaining, and playing with my children. My passions keep me busy and I wouldn't want it any other way! We respectfully acknowledge our work takes place on the unceded and sovereign Indigenous territories within the colonial borders of British Columbia.

At least once a year, during Shaggy Mane season, I make a Bear or Venison Stroganoff. It's one of my favorite dishes to make with Shaggy Manes. This year for the meat component, I used 2 jars of canned Venison and probably half a gallon of cleaned cut up Shaggy Mane pieces.

Shaggy Manes won't last very long once picked. If you can't get to them the day you pick them, then put them in your fridge, otherwise, you may end up with a black, inky goopy mess.

I didn't pick enough this year to get some on the dehydrator. I like to dry some Shaggy Manes and then powder them for soups and graves. It really adds a great deep flavor to culinary dishes.

Are people still finding Shaggy Manes in Northern BC? Or is the season done?

Yesterday, I made "mushroom and bacon bread pudding" with hedgehog and yellowfoot mushrooms. I really enjoy bread pudding, but never had it savory before.
It tastes great! Buuuut...it reminds me of Stuffing. Or it reminds me of Quiche. A blend of the two. So, what shall I call this...Stuiche? 😆

It's oddly satisfying peeling a Giant Puffball. Almost therapeutic. 🙂

Must make sure my Lamb's Quarter seeds don't spill on the way home. I lost my lid somewhere 😭
I'll spread them out on some cookie sheets when I get home, and let them dry out for a few days. Some husks were on the moist side.
Then I'll lightly blow as much husk away as I can using a hair dryer.

Thank you for the gift my friend! 🤩Another mushroom dinner coming up :)A Western Giant Puffball in all its glory

One of my favorite picks of the mushroom season. Yellowfoots! Also known as the Winter Chanterelle. They grow late season and withstand a few fronts.
They have a mild earthy flavor and wonderful texture.
I'm making some into mushroom jerky today.
I really want to go get more because it's free food and they are there, but i have too much home commitments. But who knows....

Years ago, I asked my grandma to make me some 'hunters orange arm bands' for my family. Then I asked her to make some more for my friends that I often go out with onto the land. I do use them while hunting sometimes, but I often use them more while foraging during hunting season. I'm glad we had them and wore them yesterday, as across the water on the bog, was a hunting camp. These arm bands show that we are not moose wandering around the trees in the bog 😆
Often, while foraging, our clothes are naturally dark in color, or we are dressed in camouflage too. The orange arm bands help us see eachother in the forest or through the trees in the bog. Good to wear PPE!
Oh, I have extra arm bands to place on trees where we place our baskets down to help keep track of where our stuff is. They come in so handy!
Ps: in BC (not sure aboutall of BC), it's not mandatory to wear hunters orange during the hunting season. But it's still good practice to have some on you, especially in certain places (I would wear a visyvest in some places). Foragers should also take special care during this season. Be seen!
I need a bandana for my dog. I kept her close to me. ;)

I didn't count how many Hedgehogs were in this clip. But whatever it is, it's a lot. 🙂
I wish I was video taping my reaction when I came upon this flush.
