This was Natasha’s second trip to the studio.

A few years ago, we photographed her daughter Emma for grad and prom, or maybe I should say Natasha’s clone. Those two are so much alike it’s scary. 😄

This time it was Ty’s turn.

Now Ty is a different personality than Emma. From what Natasha said, she was lucky to get him here at all.

But once he arrived, I found out what speaks his language.

Cars.

He loves cars, wants to race cars, wants to work on cars, and plans to become a mechanic. Once we started talking about that, he opened right up. I found him to be a really engaging and interesting young man.

It reminded me of when I was his age. For me, it was horses and cameras. For Ty, it’s cars.

And Natasha, I’m just saying… this guy needs a summer portrait with his car. Something epic, with a big dramatic sky behind him. There’s your little nudge. 😉

That’s what we try to do here. We try to find what makes each graduate light up. Everybody has something. A passion. A gift. A thing that sets them apart.

For Ty, it’s cars.

And someday, little brother Grayson will be next. From what I can tell, that guy’s language is sports.

I always love seeing Natasha come through the door. She has such a warm, disarming smile and personality. I was even teasing her that she should do our 40 Women Over 40 project.

Emma was pushing for it too, by the way.

Wouldn’t that be something?

Everybody deserves to feel special at some point.

And around here, we love making a big deal of people.

So how can we make a big deal of your graduate this year?

You may think you’re too late, but you’re not.

We always do our best to fit people in.

It’s not too late to come to the party. 🎓

One of the things that had me chuckling during Nathan's photo shoot was how much he reminds me of his mom.

Now, according to Dana, that's both the best thing about him... and occasionally the toughest thing about him. 😄

"People tell me I'm my mother's son," Nathan said.

And I could see exactly what he meant.

When two people are wired very much alike, they usually know exactly which buttons to push.

It reminded me of my own relationship with my mother. I loved her dearly, but I also knew how to get a reaction out of her because, in many ways, we were so much alike.

As you get older, you start to see those similarities more and more.

Beneath the friendly sparring I witnessed that day, there was also something much deeper: genuine love and respect.

When I asked Dana what she admired most about Nathan, her answer was simple.

"If I ask him to do something, whether it's taking out the garbage or helping around the house, he just does it."

That tells you a lot about a person.

I can't honestly say I was that good when I was his age, my poor mother usually had to ask me several times before anything happened.

But Nathan's willingness to step up without complaint reveals something important. He may enjoy getting his mom going once in a while, but when the chips are down, he's dependable.

And that's what really counts in life.

Being able to rely on someone brings a lot of peace of mind.

One of my favourite moments actually happened during the reveal.

Dana became emotional looking at the photographs, and without hesitation Nathan leaned over, put his hand on her back, and gently rubbed her shoulder.

It was such a simple gesture, but it told me everything.

Looks like he knows where all of his mom's buttons are... even the good ones.

Nathan also brought his girlfriend Bailey along for the experience. She seemed like the perfect match for him. She can give it right back when the teasing starts, and she has a strong personality all her own. I'd say that's a pretty good balance.

Although I do have to mention her handshake.

Let's just say it was very confident. I felt like she nearly put me through a stress test. 🤝😆

And now I'm already looking forward to next year when Sara graduates. From what I understand, she's a massive Spider-Man fan, so I have a feeling we're going to have plenty to talk about.

Some people make an impression on you the moment they walk into the studio.

It isn't always something they say.

Sometimes it's something harder to explain.

A presence.

A vibe.

That was Charlie.

When she and her mom came in for their consultation, I remember thinking there was something uniquely captivating about her. Her eyes seemed to smile even when her mouth wasn't. Yet somehow, with a single look, she could also make it feel like she was staring straight through you and into your soul.

She has one of those faces that tells a story before a word is spoken.

As we talked, I learned she loves classic music. I jokingly said, "I bet you own records."

She laughed and told me she did.

In fact, she brought several of them to her photo shoot.

The more time I spent with Charlie, the more I understood why her parents are so proud of her. You could see it in the way they looked at her throughout the day. There was no hiding it.

And then she stepped in front of the camera.

Some people need a little coaching.

Some people need a lot.

Charlie seemed to instinctively understand every suggestion I gave her. Every expression, every pose, every subtle adjustment came naturally. She wasn't trying to be captivating.

She simply was.

Just look at her eyes in these photographs.

They draw you in.

It's no surprise she hopes to pursue a career in television and radio. She's planning to attend NSCC in 2027 and is spending next year upgrading to prepare for that journey.

I have no doubt she'll do well.

She's intelligent, thoughtful, easy to talk to, and genuinely enjoyable to be around.

Truthfully, the whole family was.

What I loved most was that this wasn't just a grad photo session.

It became an event.

A day filled with laughter, conversation, proud parents, and memories.

The kind of day that reminds me these photographs are about so much more than pictures.

And I don't think any of us will forget this one anytime soon. ❤️

Some people leave an impression on you long before they ever grow up.

I've known McKenna since she was a little girl. I've photographed her many times over the years, and one of my favourite memories is a portrait of her holding a bunny. In fact, that photo has been part of our mall display for so many years that it has almost become a tradition. Every Easter when we pull it out, there she is again, smiling back at us.

And now she's graduating from high school.

Her mom told me something that really stuck with me.

"I love that no matter what has happened or what challenges she's faced, she's always come through with a smile and she's still the same kind person."

I think that's one of the greatest compliments a parent can give their child.

And I know McKenna has had her share of challenges

When McKenna walked into the studio for her session, she didn't come in like a nervous graduate. She walked in like an old friend stopping by for a visit. It made me smile then, and it still makes me smile now.

Kindness has always seemed to come naturally to her.

Maybe that's because she grew up watching it.

Her mother has spent years supporting people with intellectual disabilities, and McKenna has had a front-row seat to what it looks like to serve others with compassion and patience.

So it didn't surprise me at all when she told me she's heading to NSCC to pursue a path where she can do the same.

The world could always use more people like McKenna.

And somehow, as hard as it is for me to believe, in just four short years it'll be her little sister's turn.

Congratulations, McKenna. Your community is lucky to have you, and I can't wait to see all the good you'll do in the years ahead. ❤️

Sometimes life gives us experiences that shape who we become.

Not the easy moments.

The difficult ones.

The moments that ask more of us than we ever expected to give.

A few weeks ago, Leanne brought her daughter Olivia into the studio for her graduation and prom photos.

Like I often do, I asked Olivia what she planned to do after graduation.

Her answer came quickly.

She wants to become a social worker.

Not just any social worker, either.

She hopes to work with families and children, particularly those navigating adoption and foster care.

At first, I thought it was a pretty thoughtful answer for someone her age.

Then I learned a little more about her story.

When Olivia was younger, her family went through a very difficult season.

It was one of those situations that forced her to step up in ways most kids her age never have to. Suddenly she found herself carrying responsibilities and facing challenges that weren't supposed to belong to a twelve-year-old.

Experiences like that have a way of changing us.

They reveal strengths we didn't know we had.

They deepen our compassion.

They help us understand what other people might be carrying.

Looking back, Olivia believes that season of her life played a big role in shaping her desire to help others.

And honestly, it didn't take long to see that side of her.

As we talked throughout the session, you could tell she genuinely cares about people.

What struck me just as much was how modest she is.

While I was photographing her, I kept commenting on how photogenic she was. The light was wrapping beautifully around her face, and those strong cheekbones made it easy to create the Rembrandt-style lighting I love so much.

She seemed genuinely surprised by the compliments.

At one point we were talking about Ratchford Next Top Model, and she looked at me with complete disbelief.

"Those girls are beautiful."

As though she couldn't possibly belong in the same conversation.

By then, Leanne and Joey had joined us, and it was really sweet watching Olivia slowly light up as everyone reflected back the things they saw in her.

Not flattery.

Just the truth.

At one point I joked that she reminded me of actress Monica Bellucci, and everyone could immediately see the resemblance.

But what stood out far more than her appearance was her heart.

When I asked Leanne what she loved most about her daughter, she didn't hesitate.

Her compassion.

Her sincere desire to help people.

After spending an afternoon with Olivia, that answer made perfect sense.

Of course, we created some beautiful portraits that day.

Leanne came in with a plan.

She absolutely wanted to photograph Olivia on our black throne in her prom dress.

Turns out Mom was right.

It became one of my favourite images from the entire session.

But my favourite part of the day wasn't the photograph.

It was getting a glimpse of the young woman behind it.

A young woman whose experiences have given her empathy beyond her years.

A young woman who wants to use that empathy to make life a little better for someone else.

And if she follows that path, I have a feeling she's going to make a real difference in this world. ❤️

It's funny how we see ourselves sometimes.

When Kylie came in for her discovery meeting, I got the impression that having her photos taken wasn't exactly at the top of her list of favorite things to do. In fact, I think she was mostly doing it for her mom.

Fair enough.

She told me she had a prom dress, and I encouraged her to bring it. She also told me something I hear quite often:

"I don't like pictures of myself unless they're candid."

She even showed me a few examples, and we agreed we'd do our best.

But somewhere between that conversation and the day of her photo shoot, something changed.

Or maybe nothing changed at all.

Maybe she simply saw herself the way everyone else already did.

Because the young woman who stepped in front of my camera that day was absolutely captivating.

She had a natural presence that can't really be taught. The camera loved her. More importantly, she seemed to relax into the experience as the session went on. I told her how photogenic she was because it was true, and from that point on, she just seemed to shine.

Kylie is incredibly artistic, and I have always enjoyed creative people. They tend to bring a certain energy into a room. A way of seeing the world that makes everything a little more interesting.

She definitely had that.

We spent part of the session talking about Spider-Man 2, discovered we were both fans, and before long it felt less like a photo shoot and more like two people having a great conversation while creating something together.

What started as "a few pictures for Mom" turned into beautiful, painterly portraits in the studio and an adventure outdoors along a hidden little path she showed me that I never even knew existed.

Out there, I didn't give her much direction.

I just let her be herself.

And those ended up being some of my favorite photographs from the day.

Afterward, we celebrated with ice cream at Frosty's and wrapped up what felt like a perfect Cape Breton spring afternoon.

The whole experience reminded me of something important:

Some of the people who tell me they're "not photogenic" end up being the very people who surprise themselves the most.

So let me ask you:

Are you someone who avoids being in photos?

Do you have a son or daughter who says they hate having their picture taken?

If so, I want you to know something.

Our goal isn't just to take photographs.

Our goal is to help people see themselves differently.

To feel comfortable.

To feel confident.

To walk out of here feeling seen.

If that sounds like something you or someone you love needs, give us a call at 902-794-8880.

We'd love to meet you.

06/04/2026

It wasn't during the photo shoot that I learned the most about Anna.

It was during the reveal.

As the photographs appeared on the screen, I looked over and saw tears running down her face.

The image that stopped her was a portrait of three generations: Anna, her mother, and her grandmother.

We called it her "forever shot."

I've seen a lot of emotional reactions to family portraits over the years. Usually it's Mom. Sometimes it's Nan.

This time it was Anna.

And that told me everything I needed to know.

For all the things she has accomplished, family is still at the centre of who she is.

A few days later she sent me a message that I haven't forgotten:

"Thank you for making this experience so incredible. I can't believe I'll have that photo with my mother and grandmother forever." 💓

Those words say more about her than I ever could.

Now, I should tell you that spending the day with these three women was a treat in itself.

They knew this was a special occasion. All three arrived looking fantastic after having their makeup done by our makeup artist extraordinaire, Wren Fraser.

Anna's mom was lovely, but I have to admit, I got the biggest kick out of her grandmother.

I may have been teasing her just a little throughout the session.

Just a little.

But don't worry.

The Glace Bay gal came out in her pretty quickly and she put me in my place more than once. 😂

I knew right away we were going to get along just fine.

The laughter between the three of them, the way they looked at one another, and the obvious love they shared made the whole day feel less like a photo session and more like a family celebration.

What's remarkable is that while Anna is deeply connected to the people she loves, she's also one of the most accomplished graduates I've photographed this year.

She is graduating from Cape Breton University with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Psychology.

Her thesis, "Old Flames, New Feelings: How Do Past Relationships Affect Today's?", earned recognition for its thoughtful examination of how past relationships influence present ones.

She was also awarded the Canadian Psychological Association Award for Academic Excellence, an honour recognizing outstanding achievement in the field of psychology.

Not bad for someone who was sitting there crying over a family photograph.

But somehow, that combination makes perfect sense.

The best psychologists aren't just smart.

They care about people.

They notice people.

They are curious about what shapes us, what connects us, and why relationships matter.

Anna seems to have that gift naturally.

When you look into her eyes, you see warmth. You see empathy. You see intelligence. You see determination.

Most of all, you see a young woman who understands that while achievements are important, the people who walk beside us through life are what matter most.

So in many ways, this was her moment.

Her time to shine.

And shine she did.

Anna has that rare combination of beauty and strength. She is absolutely beautiful, but there's also something fierce about her. A quiet confidence. The kind of presence that fills a room without ever demanding attention.

She was an absolute delight to photograph.

This was supposed to be a graduation session.

Instead, it became a celebration of three generations of strong Cape Breton women and the bond they share.

And judging by the tears at the reveal, it's a day none of them will ever forget. ❤️

🌟 Some kids grow up in front of your camera.

Addison is one of those kids.

Her aunt, Courtney, has worked with me for 26 years, so Addison has been around the studio for what feels like forever. I've watched her come through these doors at every stage of her life, and I still find it hard to believe she's graduating high school. 🎓

One thing I've always loved about Addison is her honesty. What you see is what you get. Over the years, I watched a shy, quiet little girl gradually grow into a confident young woman who genuinely cares about other people. ❤️

So when she told me she wants to become a psychologist, I wasn't surprised at all.

I think some of the challenges she's faced in her own life have given her a deep understanding of people. Those experiences have a way of creating empathy, and empathy is often where helping begins.

In the middle of her photo shoot, while I was moving lights and props around, she kept asking,

"Do you need any help?"

Finally, I looked at her and laughed.

"Let's just wait until you get your degree for that." 😄

That got a smile out of her.

The truth is, we all need help from time to time. And I have a feeling the world is going to be a better place with Addison in it, doing exactly that. 💙

Another big part of her life has been dance. She's spent years dancing with Dance Sync under Angela Gratton, and now with Painted Dance Co. and it showed throughout the session. Many of the poses you see here were completely her own ideas. Creative, graceful, and confident. 🩰✨

Her grandmother Nancy is so proud of her and definitely wanted to be part of this! In fact, Addison had quite the entourage watching the session unfold. That's when you know someone is truly loved. 🥰

She also wanted to include her good friend Avery in part of the experience. The two have shared many years together through dance. I've known Avery since she was a tween herself, and she's every bit as sweet as you would imagine. The two of them are very much alike that way. Kind-hearted, thoughtful, and supportive of one another. 💕

Addison, thank you for letting me be a small part of your journey all these years.

You are beautiful in every way, and we always love seeing you walk through our doors. 🌷

I can't wait to see where life takes you next.

Let's all wish her the very best as she steps into this exciting new chapter. 🎓🎉💫

By now, you may have seen a few posts about our 40 Women Over 40 project.

But if this story doesn't warm your heart, I don't know what will.

Mary is 85 years young and lives at Breton Ability Centre. When her birthday was approaching, her staff asked what she would like for her special day.

Her answer came in the form of a simple handwritten note:

"Photo Shoot."

That little note started a conversation that eventually brought Mary to our studio.

Mary is well known and deeply loved by the people around her. And after spending time with her, it's easy to understand why.

Just look at that smile.

Look at those eyes.

There is a warmth, joy, and gentleness about her that fills a room without saying a word.

People like Mary have a way of reminding us what really matters.

We spend so much time worrying about things that may never happen, carrying burdens that often aren't ours to carry. Then someone like Mary comes along and quietly reminds us that happiness can still be found in the simplest moments.

She brings joy to everyone she meets.

The world needs more people like that.

I only wish she had brought more outfits because I think we could have photographed her all day.

The excitement on her face when I brought out the throne was priceless. And when we invited a couple of her staff members to join her for photos, her smile somehow got even bigger.

Moments like that are what this project has been all about.

Over the past months, 40 Women Over 40 has celebrated women, encouraged women, and in some cases even helped heal women.

If you've been thinking about doing it, this is your gentle reminder not to talk yourself out of it.

Something curious happens quite often.

A woman reaches out.

I reply as soon as I can.

But by the time I get back to her, sometimes only an hour or two later, she's already convinced herself she's not photogenic enough, not ready enough, or not worthy enough.

Please don't do that.

If you're thinking about it, trust that feeling.

And be as kind to yourself as you would be to someone you love.

Thank you, Mary, for reminding all of us what joy looks like.

And thank you for being such a beautiful light in this world. ❤️
