Hiccups and the unexpected happen all the time during the farming season, but it feels like it happens most during the peak busy time 🥲😅

Dave, my wonderful husband and better half, hurt his back moving the chicken tractor last night. It is how I hurt myself last month. Moving our chicken tractor back up our hill is just too much for one person we’ve realized.
So, to make sure I don’t get hurt (because Dave is not able to help move the coop) and to keep chickens happy and the fields fertilized, I switched things up.
Our chicken tractor will be home base, like the mobile coops you see on trailer bases, and the chickens will free graze all around.

I’m very interested to see if this will help our egg count too. We’ve had a massive drop in eggs the last week and a half, and hopefully giving the chickens more access to graze on their own (instead of intensive pasturing within the mobile tractor) will help.

Let’s see how this all pans out!

Even though this is the busy (and I mean stupid busy) season for us, we still try to find time as a family to spend time together. We try to find the small moments of joy and gratitude. Eating good food, soaking up ocean and sunshine. It’s about trying to not get lost and lose sight getting to the finish line. Enjoying the process (and learning to embrace and enjoy the chaos) is really what we’re leaning into right now.

⛔UPDATE: River Ridge Common Closure dates have changed.

River Ridge Common will now be closed for pesticide treatment starting Thursday, August 20, and will reopen Saturday, August 22.

During the closure:
• Please do not enter treatment areas during application or within 24 hours after treatment is complete.
• Children and pets should remain outside closed areas until the park has reopened.
• Signs and barriers will be in place; please follow all posted instructions.

This treatment is part of ongoing efforts to protect hemlock trees from hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), an invasive insect that can cause hemlock trees to decline and die. Work will be completed by Medway Community Forest Cooperative on behalf of the District of Lunenburg.

The pesticide products are registered for use by Health Canada and will be applied according to label directions by certified pesticide applicators.

Treatment is weather-dependent, and the schedule may change. Updates will be shared if needed.

Moving cows is my favourite job on the farm.
Rotational grazing is such an amazing thing, and I fell in love with it when I was in school for Sustainable Agriculture.

When we first started grazing these cows at the beginning of summer, they didn’t understand what we were asking of them. Now, with the help of some treats, they come when called! It’s the best feeling having them follow you to the next paddock.

🌞Śůn Döğș 🌞

Tex loves to keep an eye on me when I am sitting and enjoying the late summer days. Just being present and quiet here on the farm, watching the fields and the flowers and the birds is what I need to replenish after a busy bake week.

The next few days are all about catch up and enjoyment; garden work and prep, rotational grazing moves, dreaming and slowly getting ready for the fall and winter. Before I know it baking will be happening again and we’ll be back at markets.

Now that the shadows are getting longer and cooler, fall feels just around the corner. What do you enjoy doing to soak up the last bit of summer?
