Ska-Nah-Doht Village and Museum

Ska-Nah-Doht Village and Museum features a recreated longhouse village similar to those from 1000 years ago, an indoor museum, and three Heritage Log Cabins.

Located in the beautiful surroundings of Longwoods Road Conservation Area, and owned and operated by the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority. Although not built on an actual site, Ska-Nah-Doht Village is based on data collected by archaeologists and from the traditions passed on by First Nations people. Explore the village and outdoor exhibits-- find your way through the palisade maze, take

a seat in one of the longhouses, pretend to grind corn into flour in a wooden mortar and pestles, enjoy the view from the lookout. Be sure to visit the Heritage Log Cabins , donated by the local First Nations communities and Ska-Nah-Doht Museum while you are here. The village is wheelchair accessible, weather permitting.

We are often asked of the Heritage Log Cabins: "What is in the basements?" Many of the programming supplies used by the Museum and the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority education teams are stored there.

The education team recently started a deep clean of these spaces! Next up, reorganizing the materials in our programming bins.

We are pleased to share that Kristi White, author of The Adventures of Jay And Gizmo: An Indigenous Children's Book Series, will be joining us for the Ska-Nah-Doht Museum Revitalization Recognition Event being held at the Museum on Wednesday, September 23, 2026 at 6:00 p.m.

The Adventures of Jay and Gizmo is a fun, inclusive, nurturing, and culturally responsive programs for all children. Their author, Kristi is a proud Haudenosaunee woman, and member of the Oneida Nation of the Thames. Her focus is on Indigenous language and culture revitalization, and an awakening in boys literacy.�As a mother and grandmother, Kristi has spent many years guiding the establishment and implementation of programs for families and children based around healthy living, healthy relationships, literacy and cultural appropriate content and has worked alongside and consulted with numerous agency's across Canada. Kristi creates a story with books that open the hearts and minds of children from all walks of life, inspiring them to read deeper, search further, and explore their own creative gifts. Taking inspiration from Indigenous cultures, she focuses on themes that encourage independence of spirit, enthusiasm for learning, and acceptance of other languages and cultures traditions. This mama bear is also a family and disability activist, co-founder of Hoops for Hope, board member and Indigenous program coordinator for Voice of Men 360 and a proud International Woman's Day Award recipient (2022). Kristi has travelled across Turtle Island with her family who each have their own unique diversity issues with their stories and teachings. She and her family are very culturally and socially active in their communities and participate in many events and ceremonies.

You are invited to the Ska-Doht Museum Revitalization Recognition Event on the evening of Wednesday, September 23, 2026!

That evening we hope to gather our community for a recognition event for the opening of the new Indigenous Community Learning Centre and Revitalization of the Ska-Nah-Doht Museum.

During the September 23rd event we will share an opening, remarks, refreshments, and presentations. An opportunity to explore the revitalized museum, take part in hands-on activities, and mingle will follow. If you plan to attend, please RSVP with Alison Klages, Curator of Ska-Nah-Doht Village and Museum, by September 13, 2026.

For about another week or so, the Museum will have some special residents. Our seasonal team saved some Monarch caterpillars last week. They made chrysalids not long after being ensconced safely in an enclosure with extra milkweed. They should hatch into Monarchs butterflies towards the end of the month.
