It’s hard to find the words after hearing about the tragedy at CFB Wainwright.

As a veteran, this one really hits. CFB Wainwright is a place where many of us trained for many years. It holds countless memories of long days, difficult exercises, shared hardships, friendships, and moments that shaped us. These are our brothers and sisters in arms—soldiers who put on the same uniform, laughed together, supported one another, and looked out for each other. They went out to do their jobs, just like so many of us have done countless times, never imagining that some wouldn’t make it home.

My heart breaks for the families who received news that no family should ever have to hear. For the spouses, children, parents, and loved ones whose lives have been changed forever. And for the soldiers who lost their friends and who will carry the memories of this day for the rest of their lives.

To those injured, I pray for your recovery. To those who were there, I can’t imagine what you’re going through.

To our fallen, my heart breaks knowing you won’t be coming home to your loved ones. No family should ever have to say goodbye this way. You had so much more life ahead of you, and it was taken far too soon. Rest easy, you will never be forgotten.

You don’t have to know someone personally to feel their loss. Once you’ve worn that uniform, that bond never truly leaves you.

Today, my thoughts are with every soldier and every family affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.

May love surround the families, may peace bring comfort to those who are grieving, and may compassion guide us as we support one another through this difficult time.
