This is the first time in the 4 years that I've been running my business that I have ever received a message like this one and I felt that it needs to be addressed.
It's unnerved me, has deeply upset me, and has made me rethink my entire business model. It has also made me think about how accessible I am and my personal information is, and made me look into adding extra safety precautions and boundaries to my business.

For all of the lovely and kind customers who come to my door (many who have become friends) and all of the positive interactions I've had over the years, it is such a shame that one individual can unravel my sense of peace within my own home and business.

I know that with living and running a business in the most populated area in the country, the odds of coming across someone whose intentions may not be good are higher, but because I have never experienced anything like this before, it has really shaken me.

I am a true introvert and have always experienced social anxiety, especially when meeting new people. Week in and week out, I open my door to dozens of wonderful customers who I thoroughly enjoy chatting with. You've truly helped me come out of my shyness. Running my microbakery by myself can get lonely at times, and I really look forward to customer interactions every week so I don't want those to stop because of this.

However, I am going to have to make some changes to protect myself and my mental health. Off the top of my head: listing a generalised area of my pick up address on my website and on the ordering platform, Tock, and only when an online pre-order is placed then my pick up address will be revealed (this is more so for new customers); limiting where my phone number, email and address are displayed online; adding a Ring doorbell and camera.

I have a question for small business owners or anyone who has a pick up option at their home: What safety measures do you have in place to protect your privacy and safety? I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions and advice if you'd like to send me a DM.

I truly hope that I never have to write a post like this again. This whole ordeal has really emotionally drained me ๐Ÿ˜”

Introducing our newest sourdough: Rugbrรธd - a Danish seeded sourdough rye bread ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐ŸŒพ

These loaves are made with 100% whole grain rye flour from and a beautiful rye sourdough levain.

Our Rugbrรธd checks everything off the list in what you want in a loaf of bread that's made with intention:

100% Sourdough โœ…
Seeded โœ…
Whole grains โœ…
Organic โœ…
Local grains โœ…
Stone milled flour โœ…
Hearty, nutritious and delicious โœ…

A blend of organic seeds including raw pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and brown flax seeds from are soaked overnight and added to the dough, aiding in an easier digestion.

The loaves are sprinkled with the seed blend and then dusted with organic rye flour for that characteristic crackling on the top.

It's highly recommended to order the loaves sliced (13mm), for the perfect Smรธrrebrรธd (open-faced sandwiches). Next week I'll post some Smรธrrebrรธd inspiration โœจ

Rugbrรธd will be live on the website tomorrow (Saturday) to preorder for next week!

Part Three: June Blooms ๐ŸŒธ

Jesse and I took a picnic to see the peonies one last time at the Laking Garden before they move to their new home in Hendrie Park next year. It was such a gorgeous morning on Saturday and with the garden being open to members only, we pretty much had the entire place to ourselves; it was a magical end to my birthday week โœจ

The Bakehouse will be reopening again next Thursday June 25!!
I'm feeling so refreshed and am really excited to welcome you back!

I have some Bakehouse updates to share in the coming days, but for now I'm enjoying the remainder of my time off before summer begins โ˜บ๏ธโ˜€๏ธ

Part Two: Birthday Week continues ๐ŸŽ‰

During our time together, Julie planted and potted up all of the plants and herbs that I hadn't had time to plant yet. She added a sweet stone border & whimsical pathway throughout the garden, placed pots around the walkway and patio, and finished the lavender border alongside the bottom part of the walkway. I cried when I saw it and couldn't believe how different and complete the garden looked and that she did all of that work so I could enjoy the garden sooner ๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿ’š

We also spontaneously decided to Feng Shui my office/guest room! It reminded me of when we were in elementary school and we would rearrange our bedrooms often to feel like a new room. I still have concept drawings of what we wanted our rooms to look like - they would be filled with bookshelves and cosy corners to spend the day reading - that hasn't changed ๐Ÿ˜…

My office was a bit neglected and I didn't use it as much as I wanted to. Having the office on a separate floor to where I run my business makes such a big difference since all of my baking equipment/kitchen space shares the same floor as our living area, I was finding it really difficult to completely shut off once the day was done. I can't thank them enough for taking charge and creating such a cosy, well-balanced space for me to enjoy ๐Ÿฅฐ

Being able to spend quality time with two of my best friends who have supported me throughout my entire life (we've been best friends for almost 30 years!!), who booked time off work and spent time away from their own lives to show up for me this week has meant the entire world to me and the best birthday gift ever I truly couldn't have done this without them and I'm so so grateful to have them in my life ๐Ÿฉต๐Ÿ’œ

1: Making up for lost time with more sunset photos in Port Credit ๐ŸŒ…This day will forever be a core memory โœจ

2-4: Julie arranged the pots so beautifully around the walkway, it's so welcoming & inviting ๐ŸŒฟ I can't wait for customers to come and experience it.

5-6: My 'new' office/creative space/guest room! I'm so in love with the layout and can't wait to choose paint colours and decorate!

7: I made a special focaccia for Amber's brother's birthday ๐Ÿงก

Part One: Birthday Celebrations ๐ŸŽ‚ + Suzie Homemaker Organics Tasting Event โœจ

This past week and a half has been so rewarding, fulfilling, and exactly what I needed ๐Ÿฉท

It started with celebrating my birthday last Saturday, getting spoilt with such thoughtful gifts, wonderful birthday messages, delicious food and spending time with my family ๐Ÿฅฐ

I then had to quickly switch into baker mode with Suzie Homemaker Organics' big event last Wednesday!ย ๐Ÿ๐Ÿฅ‚
I'm so thankful to Suzie for the wonderful opportunity and trust ๐Ÿฉท This event has been months in the making and everything was flawless! The tables and hall were absolutely stunning; there was so much care and thought put into every single detail โœจ Congratulations lovely!! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ’

I challenged myself with the biggest bake I've ever done (84 loaves + lots of focaccia) and with Julie & Amber's support, assistance and encouragement, the entire process went so smoothly and was a massive success!

๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒธ

1: Taking a break from baking and all things bread to go for an evening walk around Port Credit's waterfront โ›ต

2-3: My table all set up for the evening! ๐Ÿž

4-6: absolutely stunning tables with my Country Grain Sourdough and a yeasted loaf for each table to be enjoyed by the guests ๐Ÿ˜ Each guest took home a lovely gift bag featuring an item from each vendor - I provided little sachet packets of my homemade organic Everything Bagel Seasoning ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿฉท

7: Celebrating my birthday with my family ๐Ÿฅฐ (we didn't plan the colour coordination, I swear ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ’™)

8: My David Austin 'James L. Austin' taking centre stage in the garden.

9: 'James L. Austin' up close. The scent is indescribably sweet and fruity. I wish I could bottle it up!

10: The climbing roses in their 5th year. There are thousands of blooms!

Hello, June! ๐Ÿฉท

My absolute favourite month of the year: it's my birthday month; it's when the garden starts coming into full bloom; it's a month to spend more time living in the moment and soaking up the last days of spring; it's a time to reflect on the year so far and look forward to all that's to come!

While the Bakehouse will be closed for pick ups until the end of the month, there will be new delicious sourdough items that will celebrate the season when I return - it'll be worth the wait, I promise! ๐Ÿ˜‹
