Let's be honest, Medicine Hat hosts a long list of incredible events throughout the year. We are incredibly fortunate to be able to share so many experiences as a community and be reminded of who our neighbours truly are. For myself, however, there is no celebration that can compare to the Special Olympics we hosted this week.
The idea of special needs paints a lot of pictures in people's minds. Some pictures may seem distressing or difficult at times, while others are heartwarming and profound when we need them most. For those of us blessed to have such a person in our daily lives, the celebration of strength, courage and ability that the Special Olympics represents is nothing short of remarkable in every way. Not only do the games give these athletes an opportunity to showcase their hard work and talent, but they also give the rest of us an opportunity to experience what the true heart of sportsmanship is really about.
When I was invited to make cookies for the High Five Festival, my heart skipped a beat. I love what I do and cannot thank every single customer I've ever had enough, but this one gripped me like no other ever could. The task seemed simple, albeit laborious. 500 cookies. A thoughtful design. And a celebration I'll never forget.
To all the athletes, coaches, families, staff, volunteers and supporters of the 2026 Special Olympics, you are the breath of life in everything you do. Simply saying Thank You can never be enough but it's all I have to offer in this moment. With the utmost love and appreciation, I wish everyone who partook in the games and welcomed them to our city the absolute best in everything you do. Have a wonderful rest of your summer. See you all again soon! Special Olympics Canada Summer Games
