When the farmers are away, the cows will escape!

Recently Fernhollow farm installed cameras throughout the farm.
Yesterday our phones kept alerting activity around the farmstand while we were off Island. Not unusual to be busy on a holiday Sunday.
We didn’t check the cameras until we were waiting at the Ferry terminal. “Holy Highland,” Dan exclaimed, “the cows are out!” And indeed, they were, happily munching and pooping all in the near vicinity of the barn.
A friend came and closed the front gates so they could not get on to the road.
When we returned, there they all were, just hanging out. Such sweethearts, with no fuss at all I walked them back into the field as Dan fetched them a treat from the barn.

They are all back where they belong now.

So, if you came up when the big moos were out, or the gates were closed, it is all good now. Farmers and cows are all back where they belong.

Yes, with regret we installed cameras. The farmstand is self-serve and there are some that misuse that hospitality, hence the cameras. The added security keeps us all safer, I’ll write a book about some of the antics that have occurred when we retire!

Thank you to all who visit the farm and farmstand-you rock our world!

So Today I am in the big city. Christmas shopping. I was looking for a gift basket. Finally found one that looked like it had something in it. Perfect. I picked it up…..$99.99!! For de nada and a plate (I always feel guilty about my prices, but I am telling you now-run, run fast, to the farmstand to pick up hostess gifts, gift-gifts, and stocking stuffers-get lots, they are a good deal!
I grew the produce, canned within a day of harvest, it is fresh, beautiful and award winning!
Here the lowdown on some of what is in the Barn.

Gift boxes, jam, or jellies wrapped up and ready to gift-$10.00 and $15.00. The best gift is a consumable gift!
Sundrop Salsa- This is just the best Salsa! I had an amazing crop of tomatoes and peppers in my new, small greenhouse. I grew gorgeous poblano peppers this year, they look so nice in the salsa. Sundrop Salsa is marked medium heat but is quite mild. I served this at happy hour one evening; a guest came back the next day to pick up a case! A nice compliment.
Fir Tip Jelly- I gather fir tips in the spring, make an infusion with them, and turn that into jelly. Fir tip jelly has a mild lemony flavour and is high in vitamin C that would pair well with cheese, meat, or bread. It is claimed to be extremely high in Vitamin C. Fernhollow Fir tip jelly won first place at the Fall Fair - and a rosette!
Cowboy Candy – these are screamin hot candied peppers. (disclaimer: does not come with or attract cowboys). It looks pretty too. Eat the peppers-brush the liquid left on, bacon, brie or ham.
Farmhouse Scrubbies - I have shot myself in the foot with a scrubby. I had decided not to make any this year (or ever) until my son said, “Mom I need more scrubbies-they are the best thing ever!” My husband cannot wash dishes without one, I would not want to put a damper on that! Oh well, crocheting scrubbies kept me out of trouble on the ferry, and I admit I love to use them too. Scrubbies wash dishes, scrub vegetables, clean counters, burnish bathtubs and exfoliate skin! They are long-lasting and can be washed in the dishwasher or washer. Small but Mighty!
Get Growing Book- Loaded with information on growing food in the Pacific Northwest and written and printed on Mayne Island! I get rave reviews from gardeners who love this book-I love this book! There are 2 small Kelpman liquid fertilizers, that’s it until spring so if you are overwintering plants or have house plants, come and get them!
There is more, but I will leave that for later. When I return- I am making gift baskets! Stay tuned-they will be under$99.99.

IT’S ALMOST HERE
The floor is swept, the cobwebs somewhat diminished (it is a barn) and the lights are on, now we just need to add some fairy dust, jars of preserves, giftware, crafty crafts of all sorts and the magic begins! The fire is lit, and the coffee will be ready.
The sun will be shining and all the farm animals on display. Come and do some holiday shopping (it’s good to get it done early)! Or just visit, three calves were born in early summer, big thank-you to Daisy the bull. He is a great dad, you will often see him laying in the field surrounded by the calves.

Hello all

Farm gates are closed as we let cows, calves (and dad) settle in.
Dixie Belle had a little bull, healthy and happy, Gertie had a heifer who we are caring for diligently but she is not out of the woods yet, Sweet Pea had a little heifer early this morning or late last night.

Babies should be out and about in about a week. They are keeping close to their moms or snuggled in the tall grass.

Life is good on the farm.

Last season was a little anxiety fest. We had 10 beef and no feed. It's hard to post when you are worried.
We were purchased a very bad load of hay for $6,000.00 and change. (sorry kids, mommy and daddy are busy feeding your inheritance to a bunch of hairy beasts).
To boot the hay/straw mix was moldy and one of our young steers was poisoned.....Jump to this season
In September we went to Merritt and picked up a Highland bull.
Our granddaughter was tasked with naming him, so, we now have Daisy the bull. Daisy has been doing what Daisies do and we are expecting calves hopefully at the end of this month.
So stay tuned, life is good.

It is time to create some magic on Mayne!
On May 25th The Mayne Island Agriculture Society is hosting a seminar on composting and Effective Microorganisms (EM). After the seminar we will be brewing some Effective Microorganisms ourselves. What is it and how do you use it? Come to the seminar and discover this healthy, natural wonder!
EM improves seed germination, plant establishment, flowering, fruit production and yields. It is beneficial to the soil food web.
EM can inoculate bokashi bran, make healthier compost that breaks down faster and increase microbial diversity in the soil (that’s a good thing).
Produce washed with a little EM has a longer storage life. Animals (livestock and pets) benefit from EM added to their water (no more stinky dog breath). Household use includes cleaning, and laundry, smelly laundry solved with a tsp or two in the washing machine! Humans take food grade EM as a source of powerful probiotics, and EM is used in deodorant, toothpaste, and skin care products. EM is used to keep greywater odour down and benefit the septic system is used to treat wastewater (I put some down the sink occasionally). EM even finds use at garbage dumps, for oil spills, and in disaster relief zones.
There is so much more. When I first heard about EM, I was dubious but now I’m a believer, I wouldn’t leave her…
The seminar is free for MIAS members, $10.00 for non-members (you can buy a $5.00 membership at the door). There is a $25.00 fee for the ingredients to make a 2L bottle of EM to take home. You are welcome to come for just the seminar (and to change your mind and stay to make EM!).
Please shoot an email off to [email protected] if you want to make EM so we know how much material to prepare.
See you there!
Ag. Hall Mayne Island May 25. 10am-12pm (Seminar only10am-11am).
