Fall flavours have officially arrived at the Red River Cafe!

All of us at the Cafe and the Arva Flour Mill have been so excited to bring back some of our favourite flavours of the season! We may have gone a little pumpkin crazy this year!🎃

This fall, we’re featuring our house-made pumpkin spice syrup, available to add to any hot or iced coffee, along with our pumpkin rolled cake filled with cream cheese filling, pumpkin spice scones, and Dutch apple pie scones topped with butterscotch glaze.

We’re also especially excited to be partnering with Crunican Orchards this fall! We’re using their beautiful Gravenstein apples in our Dutch apple pie scones. Crisp, sweet, and perfectly tart, they’re the ideal apple for bringing that classic fall flavour to every bite.

Come enjoy a little taste of fall with us, whether that means pumpkin spice in your coffee, a freshly baked scone, or maybe both! We certainly won’t judge! ☕🍂

For 207 years, a working flour mill on Medway Creek has been part of Canada's story — from a Crown land grant in 1819, to a national breakfast icon, to the Buy Canadian wave of 2025. Today, that story has a home.

In 207 years, this mill has changed hands only a handful of times — the early millers on the Proof Line Road, Jacob Hawkins and the Daisy Flour era, and then a full century of stewardship by the Templemans, Scotts, and Matthews. We're honoured to be the next chapter. When we became stewards five years ago, we inherited an extraordinary archive the families before us had lovingly kept for decades. We reached out to Western University for help preserving it for the long term.

Those records are now held at Archives and Special Collections, Western Libraries (Fonds AFC526 — Arva Flour Mill), where they'll be cared for and made accessible for generations to come. Graduate students in Western's Digital Public History course, under Mike Dove, then poured real research into bringing this timeline to life. As Western alumni, our whole family is deeply grateful for the partnership.

The story isn't ours to tell alone. It belongs to the millers, the farmers, the families, and the neighbours who have kept this mill turning since 1819 — and especially to every customer who's ever walked through our door for a bag of flour, a scone, or a bit of history. Thank you.

We just found out Canadian marketing storyteller Tod Maffin gave Red River Cereal a shoutout in his reel about the legendary "Diamond Shreddies" campaign...and yes, that's our cereal sitting on his kitchen shelf. 🇨🇦

Red River Cereal has been a staple in Canadian kitchens for over 100 years, so it was a nice surprise to spot our product on Tod's shelf too. It's has been made the same honest way for generations, and it's still 100% Canadian-owned, right here in Arva, Ontario.

Even the Great Egret decided to join us for breakfast today… we have a feeling he may have heard it’s Smash Burger Wednesday!

WE'RE HIRING — Mill Assistant / Apprentice Miller

Arva Flour Mills is looking for a hands-on team member to join us at the mill in Arva, Ontario.

This is a full-time, permanent day-shift role. You'll work alongside our team operating milling equipment, blending and packaging bakery mixes, handling shipping and receiving, and helping maintain our food-safety and quality standards.

No milling experience required — we'll train the right person. If you've got a mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and want to learn a trade at Canada's oldest commercial flour mill (operating since 1819), we want to hear from you.

We sent Maffin a box of Red River Cereal last month. He told us not to. We did it anyway.

This week, Tod asked Canadians to recommend one Canadian product new to them — and more than 800 recommendations came in. Red River Cereal was one of the most-mentioned products in the entire list. 🇨🇦

Tod noted that many people didn’t know we were back. That hit home for us. We brought this brand back in 2022 because we believed Canadians still wanted it — and posts like this remind us why.
