We are officially open for U-pick, the sign went up this afternoon. The berries are nearly 2 weeks early, compared to last year. The picture was taken minutes ago, including my hand for scale.

The bumblebees have been hard at work pollinating the blueberry blossoms, and millions of berries are now forming. The small green berries now weigh less than half a gram each. In mid-July they will start to take on the lovely blue color that comes from the anthocyanins that keep us healthy. The sun and rain will increase their weight to as much as 5 or 6 grams each. Some very young you-pickers like to compete with each other to find the very largest berry, and I keep a small jewelers scale on hand to check their trophies!
