Hey Friends! Have you followed our new venture yet? Maison d'Envie
I was once an aspiring actor, called to the arts from a very young age. It was a thankless and often brutal destiny. There were many days in the city spent working a soul-crushing 9-5, and sneaking out during lunch breaks to run (and I mean literally run) across Toronto to castings. Sometimes two in one hour. Coming back defeated, with feet bleeding and a shirt drenched in sweat, and doing everything possible to ensure no one noticed. Limping home at the end of the day to a partner who grimaced as he watched me try to pull my shoes off, then would take my face in his hands and tell me not to give up, to never give up. The overnight shoots doing background work for $10/hr then going to work the next day, the booked gigs that made me feel I was really getting somewhere, only to end up on toxic sets being asked to do things that frankly, weren't always OK.
Being drawn to something that does everything in its power to prove to you that you aren't good enough is something that anyone working in any form of the arts is no stranger to. The rejection, the tears, the financial hardships, the sacrifices and the hope. What Maison d'Envie is aiming to do, is to give Canadian artists a new platform. A space for them to shine, to be discovered, and to be understood. Yes, we are small. No, this isn't the city. But we want to help the people whose hearts are poured into every single piece you'll find in the shop a moment to be celebrated. Their exceptional talent, their level of craftsmanship, the hands-on time spent creating. Canada is brimming with so much creative genius, and Maison d'Envie is proud to give it a home.
We can't wait to welcome you into the space, just a few more weeks...
