🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨
Well, thank goodness it’s Friday!!
Today I invite you to grab a cupcake, pour yourself an extra giant cup of coffee, (mostly because this is going to be a long post 🫣😁) and let’s chat about the crazy week it has been. 😮💨
If you don’t have time to join me right now, make sure you save this post so you can catch up on it later because maybe this is for you today.🥰 I also ask that once you are finished reading that you please share it so it might reach someone else who needs to hear it. 🤗
Sometimes, it seems like things are coming at us all at once and from every direction. So much so that we wonder if we can even carry the weight of it all or make it through to the other side of the chaos.
And just when you think that your feet are back on firm ground and things are settling down, you get hit with one more thing.
🙋♀️ this was me yesterday. I didn’t wake up feeling great but I had a plan in my head of how my day was going to go. I had things that I had put off because something else had taken my attention and by golly, I was gonna get caught up and get it done yesterday.
… but once more, life had other plans and again I was interrupted.
I received a phone call midday, in the middle of me “ getting it all done” that totally changed the course of the day. I thought to myself “ OK, I will just go and be where I’m needed and get back in time to finish my tasks” … and of course, once again, the way I thought things would go, wasn’t the way things were actually going to go.
I found myself sitting in a hospital, emergency room with my daughter, waiting for an ambulance to take her for a CT of her head and spine. She had been in a rollover accident involving a recreational vehicle two days prior. She thought she was un injured and was just badly bruised, but by the second day, her pain had increased to the point that she thought she should be medically seen. (please note that she is an adult child of mine and if it were up to me, she would’ve been in there the day it happened.😉)
Now, neither of us could understand why the doctor wouldn’t just let me drive her to the neighbouring hospital that had the CT scanner rather than be taken there by ambulance. I mean, I drove her there didn’t I? Why couldn’t I drive her again? She didn’t feel that it warranted an ambulance ride and she felt like it was a little “extra drama”than the situation called for and didn’t want all the fuss. Plus, we waited for literally hours for them to arrive to take her for the exam. But the doctor was firm in his decision and said no, she must be taken by ambulance. So we waited. The ambulance arrived and loaded her up and away we went. Thank goodness there was a seat available in the back for me to be able to come along and sit with her for the 47 minute drive to the hospital that had the CT scanner.
I don’t know if anyone reading this has ever had to ride in an ambulance, but it is certainly not a smooth, luxurious ride in any way. You can feel absolutely every single bump or crack on the road and it is quite loud with road noise. If you’re not buckled in, you would definitely be tossed around a little. Also, because you can’t see out any windows, it is easy to feel carsick from not being able to anticipate the stops and starts or any right or left turns that are being made.
I know this is taking me a long time to spit out, but please stick with me because I promise, there really is a point to my story.
So there we are in the back of the ambulance. There is one paramedic driving while the other paramedic sits at the head of my daughter and keeps an eye on her well-being and simultaneously records our trip. I sat there safely, buckled into my seat in quiet prayer, handing over my worries about my girl to my heavenly father. When I was done, I looked up and noticed a clock to the right of me on the wall. It was counting the time even to the second. It felt like it was taking forever to get there and every time I looked at the clock it had only been a couple of minutes. And then I noticed it… Every now and then, there would be an arrow flashing just above the time on the clock. It was flashing an arrow pointing to the left, and then sometimes there would be a red light beside it, while at other times, it would come on and flash with the arrow, pointing to the right… Then finally, I clued in (ha ha ha) that the digital clock that I was looking at on the wall, not only showed me what time it was, but it also showed me when the ambulance driver was going to be turning left or right, or when they were touching their brakes (it would turn red) or when we were to accelerate it would turn green.
I felt pretty proud of myself for noticing that small detail and for finally catching on, so I mentioned it to the paramedic that was sitting with us in the back of the ambulance. He confirmed my observation and pointed out to me the other three clocks. One hanging at the front of the ambulance, one at the back of the ambulance, and then one each on either of the side walls of the ambulance. He said they were there so that it didn’t matter where he was sitting, that he could look up and know which direction they were going to turn next or when they were going to stop etc. He said it was there to help them not get sick while riding in the back. All he had to do was look up and know which direction they were about to go. “ well that’s brilliant!” I said, as he kinda looked at me like I was a little weird 🤭 (clearly little details make me happy).
We arrived at the hospital, she had the CT and I didn’t realize that now we had to drive all the way back to the hospital to get the results and then be discharged home. Here was another 47 minute ride back in the back of a noisy and bumpy ambulance. By this time, it was already pushing midnight. What a long day! And it just felt a little bizarre that all this fuss was going on over something that both she and I thought could’ve been handled by me driving her there and back myself. During the entire 47 minute trip back, I kept watching as the little directional lights kept flashing above the clocks, and I was able to keep myself stable in my seat by looking at them, anticipating all the turns we were taking on the way back. Because of that, I avoided the icky feeling of car sickness.
So we arrived back at the original hospital and the results of my daughter’s CT had beat us there. She got settled back into her exam room, and we expressed our gratitude to the paramedics for the Safe trip and the care that they gave her on the way there and back. As they left the room, the doctor came in and said to my daughter
“ your CT is clear of any major injuries. you have experienced impact trauma to your muscles and soft tissues which will require anti-inflammatories, a muscle relaxant and some physical therapy. You are going to be fine with a little rest and time. You are free to go.” 🙌🏻😮💨 whew! What a relief!
I kept thinking to myself “ what a bizarre day!” both my daughter, and I knew in our hearts that nothing major was wrong, but all these people were insisting on going above and beyond to make sure that nothing was wrong. She received care above and beyond what she felt she deserved for the situation she was in, and that made her uncomfortable, and sometimes even a little resistant to the care.
So I asked God this morning in my quiet time with him, “Lord, what was the point of yesterday? What am I supposed to learn from all that went on yesterday?” Then I realized how yesterday’s ride in the back of an ambulance, parallel’s life and how unpredictable and bumpy it can be.
Life is very bumpy and it is easy to get tossed about when we hit the big bumps if we aren’t buckled in and secured. God is the driver of my life that I cannot see because I’m sitting in the back. The Holy Spirit is the one sitting right beside me, going with me,making sure I’m taken care of. If I think about it now, I trusted that driver to take us safely to the hospital. The driver knew the way and the route to take. I couldn’t see the way, and even though in my mind I was trying to picture the road we were taking, I just couldn’t anticipate all the stops and starts and the turns that we would take. The driver also did not take the route that I had thought in my mind we would take. But we still got there safely, and we probably got there in better time than if I had my say in it at all.
Metaphorically speaking, do you see where I am going with this? God is THE driver of our lives if we allow him. He knows the way, he has the plan. He knows how to get you where you need to be even before you know you need to be there. And he will make sure you have everything you need in order to get there. Even though you don’t see him, he is there with you, he doesn’t leave you to get somewhere on your own. Even though you don’t see him, he is there. He goes above and beyond to make sure that you get the extra care that you need for your own good and for his glory.
He’s given us his Holy Spirit, which in this story is the clock with the arrows, pointing us on which way we should go. Do we go right? do we go left?
Are we stopping? Are we starting? It doesn’t matter where you are sitting, all you have to do is look straight up and look for the arrow, the arrow telling you which way to lean, which way to go so you don’t have to struggle with the noise and motion sickness of life tossing you around. You can remain securely buckled into your seat, knowing that God is in the driver seat and he is going to get you where you need to be. Regardless of the bumps and the noise. You have the Holy Spirit beside you to guide you. All you have to do is quiet yourself, and let him remind you to look up for the direction you are to head to next. He wants to be invited into your life. But you have to ask him for help with that.
Today, I invite you to quiet the noise of life and place your eyes on him. It doesn’t matter which direction you are sitting, he promises that he will go before you, behind you and beside you as a shield. And your times are in his hands. And if I can trust a perfect stranger who I could not see, to drive me and my precious daughter at high speeds on the highways and through the city to get us there safely, why would I not trust my God to get me where I need to be in life safely too?
He created us, and he loves us more than we could ever imagine. We are HIS!🙌🏻😮💨
He is concerned with all that concerns his kids… The big things, and the tiny little things too. And if I keep my eyes on him, ask him to show me the way, and then trust him with my life, he will get me where I need to go safely. It’s not always going to go the way I want it to or the route that I would have chosen, but if I walk in obedience to his direction, asking him for help along the way, and then listening to him… by his grace and mercy I will get there safely… And so will you!
Father God, I thank you for today! I thank you for each person who stayed to read to the end. I thank you that there are no insignificant things that happen in my life that you can’t use for good and your glory. At the time I could not see the significance of what you were doing yesterday with regards to” the ride” but today I do. Thank you, Lord, that you went over and above yesterday to make sure that your precious children were looked after and cared for. Thank you for health and for healing. Today I am able to use my story to encourage someone who might be feeling a little bit, lost in life. Someone who’s looking for a driver and a guide to step in and just get them where they need to be. Today, father God, I asked that they would receive you and your Holy Spirit as that driver and that guide. That they would know that you want to go above and beyond caring for them in a way that exceeds all that they could ever ask, think, or imagine! I pray that they would just take a moment to quiet the noise in their life and just sit with you and say, “ Lord, I need you to lead me and guide me, I cannot do life without you. I give up control of how I think things should go. I’m done struggling to make it all work on my own. I’m tired and I need you to come alongside me and refresh me, to pick me up and take me to where I am meant to be. To be in your perfect will for my life. Would you come Lord Jesus, come into my heart today and do what only you can do in me. Amen.”
I pray that God‘s perfect love would chase you down and run you over today! That wherever you are feeling overwhelmed that he would take it from you and replace it with His overwhelming perfect love!
