“Let’s smash the stigma - everyone has mental health.” - The Burnt Chef Project

I was fortunate enough to sit in on Imrun Texeira & Rob Hood’s presentation around what The Burnt Chef Project is, how it was founded, the impact it makes, & the mental health resources it offers for FREE. When I tell you the energy in this room was indescribable.

Did I leave the room full on crying? Yes. I was crying for the stories I heard from chef’s across the country. From the chef who kicked addiction 39 years ago to the chef who lost himself in drugs, alcohol, and the “in the weeds” part of the job, to the chefs who lost friends in the industry and how they weren’t talked about afterwards. I was crying from my own experiences over the last 10 years. I was crying from the human connection of hugging supportive friends from across this beautiful country.

I could truly go on and on about mental health. I have always been a huge supporter of these conversations happening. I’m not ashamed to say that I am on a SSRI for my anxiety. It debilitated me sometimes to the point I was not confident in any decision I made, I would be shaking like crazy paying for groceries, I could hardly have conversations without second guessing every aspect of it, and there was always a tiny voice telling me I wasn’t enough. Zoloft helped. A therapist helped. Journaling helped. Addressing my mind helped. Yoga & meditation helped. Resources & support helped.

Chef Ryan, the outgoing president of the Canadian Culinary Federation and Chef Rene, the current president of the American Culinary Federation awarded me with this special coin tonight. It is such an honor and a privilege to be recognized. I cannot put into words how much this meant to me tonight. Tears were shed and lots of hugs were given.
