The Butter Tart Man

The Butter Tart Man Do you love butter tarts? So do I. I couldn't find many good ones in or around Hamilton, so I starte Cheers, John a.k.a. 'The Butter Tart Man'

As far back as I can remember, my favourite dessert has been butter tarts. Because I was quite a chubby baby, I assume that it was because my mother fed me pureed butter tarts instead of fruits and veggies. I love butter tarts, and craft beer, but not together unless I've had one too many craft beers. In recent years, as our family traverses various towns and cities in Canada, I will drag my famil

y around in search of the 'best local butter tart' and micro brew. Since moving to Hamilton in 2005, I have tried many a local tart. And while many are yummy, I haven't quite found an over-the-top-delicious BT, that has had me longing for more. In 2016, driven by a quest for a superb BT and my curiosity if I could meet my own needs for once in my life, I set out to see if I could bake such a tart. After many batches and many enhancements, I created a unique recipe that is a combination of 6 recipes that includes Canadian maple syrup instead of corn syrup and a secret ingredient or two. While these are labour intensive and I am not likely to get rich from making them, it is rewarding to hear that people really enjoy them. If you decide to place an order, I hope that you too will have trouble eating just one.

Hi fellow butter tart lovers! It has been so long since I’ve posted and nearly 5 months since I pulled out my pans and pastry cutter. I hope that you are doing okay and that your family and friends have been safe and healthy during the pandemic. While I love baking for you, butter tarts have seemed inconsequential when compared with all that has been going on.

I stand with all who are pushing for racial equality and will continue to look for ways I can learn and grow as a person and also help push as well from my position of privilege. Black Lives M🖤tter; it’s important to me to support the continued momentum of the movement. Until next time, be well!

Hello everyone, while I have heard from a number of people over the past month or so, I'm sorry that I haven't posted anything. I am currently keeping close to home with the family and will not be making any butter tarts until things are safe enough for people to be out and about and interacting with one another. Until then, please be well, stay safe and take care. I hope to see you again soon!

These simple, gooey, incredibly sweet tarts are a national treasure, even appearing on a Canada Post stamp, but some food enthusiasts say it might be time to strip them of their iconic status and make way for something new.
