I’ve been seeing so many “sourdough” varieties at Costco lately, I’m always curious & check the ingredients but usually it is not true sourdough & really it’s just regular bread maybe with less sugars added..
Is your sourdough bread actually sour faux ?

Most store bought (and let’s be honest most restaurants) is made with commercial yeast & and ingredient to fake the sourdough tang - such as vinegar.

So why does that matter?
1. The health benefits. If you are buying sourdough bread because you’ve heard it’s just for you, just know you probably aren’t getting those in the grocery store.
The benefits of sourdough comes from a long fermentation. If the bread contains yeast that’s a sign they are speeding up the process & you won’t be getting the Gut health benefits.

2. The taste. People tell me all the time that they thought they didn’t like the taste of sourdough until they had homemade sourdough. But what they really didn’t like was the vinegar or the absorbic acid added to the dough to create that fake tang. Homemade sourdough can actually be pretty mild.

3. Lake of transparency. When buying mass produced sourdough bread from the grocery store you have no idea their process or how long they are fermenting the dough. Just because some sourdough starter is added to the dough and labeled as sourdough doesn’t make it authentic sourdough.

So support your local sourdough micro bakery because if you want sourdough bread it’s worth getting the real stuff to get all the benefits!
