Queen of Buttercream

Queen of Buttercream I call myself the Queen of Buttercream because all of my cakes have a buttercream finish. It tastes better than fondant and can look just as good-if not better!

I specialize in Custom/Specialty Cakes (including Weddings) and Cake Pops for special events.

I don't make many cakes these days but this one was for one of my best friends husband's 40th. I also like trying new cake techniques. This is a gravity defying cake. Not as difficult as it looks. All buttercream except the handle, and it is a real beer can. The cake is 8 inches round and stands 9 inches tall (20 inches high with the beer can). I had to remove two shelves in my fridge. Happy birthday, David!

I think this is my first cake since Eric's birthday in November. Jack turns 11 on Tuesday. I got up at 6:30am today and started from scratch. Made two cakes, two batches of icing and all the fondant decorations, then put it together. I finished at 4:30pm. Exhausted, but worth it to see how happy he was when it was done.

It's been a little while since my last cake. Just no time. The boys are very busy. We are on the go most nights. Eric turned eight on Thursday. Another Blue Jays themed party. The finish is all buttercream; Blue Jays logo and Eric's name are fondant. Inside is half vanilla, half chocolate. Best of both worlds.

Small wedding cake topper for a cupcake tower this past weekend. The cake was vanilla with buttercream filling. Yes, this is a buttercream finish if you are wondering. Never did this before but was pretty confident on how it would turn out. Looks like a birch tree to me!.... You be the judge. The flowers are fondant.

Rose cake for my mother in law Rose. The cake is coconut, with coconut flavoured icing and filled with homemade coconut cream. So good! Definitely the family favourite.

This cake looks much bigger than it is. Six inch round on the bottom and four inch round on the top. This is for Jack's best friend, Ryan. They play on the same baseball team, the Diamond Dawgs. Finished in buttercream with some fondant details.

My co-worker and good friend, Lorrie retires on June 1, 2016. Her last day was Friday, May 20th, 2016. I'm so sad she is leaving but so happy for her and her husband, Harold that they get to retire together. Lorrie didn't want a big party, so we had a small potluck at work (well, our potlucks are never small). I made her this strawberry shortcake stacked cake. Not one piece left and I think there were people that didn't get a piece! So sorry... I'll make another for the next potluck.... Maybe.

Dance cake to celebrate Megan's 8th birthday. I've been making cakes for her and her sister Madison for the last six years. The top layer was chocolate with raspberry filling and the bottom was chocolate filled with buttercream. Katie, I hope you saved me a piece :) Happy birthday to two of my favourite girls!

The last cake I made was for Jack's birthday back in February, so I was a little nervous being out of practice for this one. An ambulance cake for a paramedic just graduating from the program. Lots of thought had to go into this cake. There are two wooden boards underneath it to make it look like it is balanced on the wheels. I drew the ambulance on paper first and then made it to scale. Donnie was away this week so I was looking after the two kids and then working on this after bedtime. I'm due for a two day nap.

My fourth Star Wars cake. I'm not sure which one I like the most, this one or my Yoda cake from two years ago. This is the new droid, BB8. I generally go out of my comfort zone for my own kids. If I screw it up, no big deal, they'll eat it anyway and it won't get posted! Jack is going to be in double digits next week, but his party is today. This turned out better than I thought it would. In hind sight, I should have made the circles bigger. The finish is all buttercream with fondant accents.

This year, my niece, Elizabeth wanted cupcakes or her birthday. Cupcakes are chocolate topped with buttercream, sprinkles and a heart shaped gummy... Because I love her :)
