Dazzle Charity Bakes is an initiative to provide free, custom-made birthday cakes to women and children fleeing domestic violence. We are currently partnered with three domestic violence shelters in HRM, and coordinate with the staff there to ensure that every person spending a birthday under their protection will get their own birthday cake, tailored to their favorite colors, tastes, and themes. A Dazzle cake is more than a cake with their name on it – it’s a cake made with them in mind.

Why birthday cakes, you might ask?
Well, birthdays are the only time in our culture that we celebrate people just for existing, and not for their accomplishments, such as a graduation, wedding, or retirement.
This is wonderful when circumstances allow such celebration. However, when difficulties arise, birthdays are often the first thing to go.

Unfortunately, the subliminal message this sends is often that the individual in crisis is now somehow less worthy or valued. On one’s birthday, the only day whereby people celebrate each other just for being, having it pass unacknowledged in a crisis shelter can further emphasize these feelings. This is particularly true for children.

Dazzle’s philosophy is that a custom birthday cake does more than create a memory and invite some fun and celebration.
It sends a very strong message to its recipient: you are seen, you are loved, you matter, and we’re just so glad you’re here. (Don’t give up.)

Yes, birthday cakes are quite a bit of fuss. But everyone deserves a fuss, and to be reminded of their worth. In this vein, Dazzle was born out of a desire to spread hope and self-esteem to women and children in crisis, who feel isolated or forgotten by society at large. Everyone who purchases a Dazzle cake or cupcakes is showing community support to help these survivors build themselves up in the face of very difficult circumstances.
