I am a self-taught cake, cookie and food artist - (with the help of YouTube, blogs, tv shows, and so many incredible decorators/artists & pastry chefs who have shared their knowledge, techniques and tips along the way.)
I love that something as small as a cupcake or cookie can bring people so much joy. For me, that is what decorating is all about. I’ve loved to bake for as long as I can remember. Helping my Grandma roll out the pie crust, enrobe the cheesecake with cherry filling or create delectable scones from scratch to use with her top-secret recipe for her to die for strawberry shortcakes. She inspired me & taught me all she knew about baking, and I loved it.
While I’ve always loved to cook and bake, my passion for cake decorating wasn’t discovered until years later, in 2010 - when a family friend said she was having a hard time finding anyone who offered custom fondant decorated cakes. I offered to give it a shot without any promises of a flawless outcome. And good thing, because it was far from that. However, to my surprise, everyone was so incredibly happy with the way the cake looked and tasted. The joy, excitement and appreciation on their faces for something I had created is where my obsession began.
After a couple posts on Facebook, it wasn’t long before family and friends started submitting their unique requests for edible works of art from my tiny home-based kitchen. This came as a welcomed surprise and quickly turned into a full-time hobby. I needed a place to save photos for a portfolio of my work, and House Of Cake was born.
During my down time, I picked up a part time job at a local grocery store bakery. I was lucky enough to learn from an incredibly talented (and award winning!!) cake artist, Denise and my incredibly talented pastry chef best friend, Karissa. It was there, surrounded by bowls of buttercream, and covered in flour, that something clicked. Baking was my happy place. Karissa and I would dream and talk about the days when we would open our own bakery. But it seemed so far out of reach.
A few years later another opportunity arose to work at a small local bakery, again, with my BFF. This job only further fueled my fire and passion. Watching customers eyes light up when seeing their custom order or eating their favourite dessert, was magical - that was something that I knew I wanted to be a part of. Sadly, after almost three years at this bakery, and some health complications, I was laid off and my career came to a sudden & devastating halt.
As heartbreaking as the news was, I tried to see it as a blessing in disguise and the extra push I needed. With the encouragement and support from my husband, loyal clients, friends and family (you know who you are! Thank you!! ❤), I decided to finally take the leap, push forward with my dream and work towards a place I could call my own. While our reality of our own storefront is in the plans for the very distant future, I do have access to a shared, sweet little health inspected kitchen and I can’t wait to get started! The first little while will be a blur of cake & cookie crumbs and little to no sleep, but this sugary world that brings so much joy to so many, is where I'm meant to be and I'm so happy to share it with you!
Thanks for stopping by!
