Small Business Week comes to an end today. 🥰

If you've followed along this week, this is my last reality check. 😝 Still sounds worse than I mean it...
I have shared six of my/ our realities as small business owners to date, and here is number 7.
A little behind the scenes. A bit of our experience.

Today's topic: Fun.

Love it. Change it. Or leave it.
You've had heard that one efore, I am sure.

I haven't always loved it, and there are still many moments where I don't... 🙂🙃
I have changed many things in the biz and myself and continue to learn and grow. 🤔
I am definitely NOT ready to leave it. The Gallery furever! 😆🙌

But I had to get away from my black and white thinking;
you know the 'If this [insert cause of worry here] is over, I will be happy...'.

I am done waiting. I am here to have some fun.
Tough times will be tough times. I aim to resist with laughter and love.

Grateful for the team, this island, You.

This year, I decided to give you a reality check. 😝 Sounds worse than I mean it...
Every day this week, I will share one of my/ our realities as small business owners.
A little behind the scenes. A bit of our experience.

Today's topic: Money. 💲

Let's address the elephant in the room: Money.
No ones likes to talk about it, everyone needs it.

So do we.

Cause we are a BUSINESS.

Our sales pay for our staff's wages, suppliers, rent, insurance, licenses, banking fees, equipment, repairs, donations... and anything else I couldn't think of here.
But it also pays for Mike's and my mortgage, groceries, gas, car payments, healthcare, dog food... and everything else you budget for as well.

And because we are a SMALL business, we (husband and wife) are in it with our entire livelihood and all of our personal energy. This is our livelihood.

So when you see Mike doing repairs, it's usually to save money (yes, I said it!), and because it's sometimes hard to get someone qualified in fast.
And you don't want us to be with a malfunctioning espresso maker for a week or so, do you?! ☕

When you see me clearing tables or taking orders, it usually means that we are in a rush and our staff is doing what they do best (= making your food and drinks). And because labour cost percentage is always on a coffee shop owner's mind, we chip in often enough to help.
Also, I love to connect with our customers. 🫶

When we increase our prices or have to say No to a donation request, it's not because that's something we like to do. It's because we are a small business and we need to make ends meet in order to continue to be here for you.

Did you notice how I said 'when' here, not 'if'?!
Cause all of the above is our everyday reality.

Every day this week, I will share one of my/ our realities as small business owners.
A little behind the scenes. A bit of our experience.

Today's topic: Authenticity.

If I could, I would be the crazy dog lady who owns a dog cafe... 🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶
Since dogs are not allowed in restaurants on PEI (yet🤞), I will settle for having them on the patio, doing fundraisers for them, and possibly petting every single one that walks by...!

Because we love dogs.
And quirky art.
And poetry.
And so many other things...

And we want that to show in our space, its energy, the vibes.
We want you to know who we are and what we stand for.
So that you know who you are dealing with. So that you know why you come here.

We chose to be authentic. But it was quite the journey to get here.

When we opened The Gallery, it was only about good coffee and food, and a little bit about art. We felt everything had to be "clean" (for the lack of a better word), in the sense of "this is a nice business", "we are professional people".
We've worked hard to learn the ropes of the hospitality industry, and honestly felt like impostors more than once.

The Gallery was in our every thought and feeling; it dictated our lives. It infused itself into us.
And then something magically happened: We've infused ourselves into it too.
Not just with hard work and business demeanor but also with our very own, very authentic traits.
The Gallery, that is Jess & Mike and the team.
And it's evolving as we are, as we grow, as we learn. Even with our mistakes.

Cause we are human.
We are not just a business. We are a small business. And real people operate it. With all their facets.

A little behind the scenes. A bit of our experience.

Today's topic: Persistence.

No, we did NOT run last weekend's PEI marathon.
This is a photo of Mike & I from twelve years ago when we were younger and fitter and had just run our longest race ever, a 15K. 😅

I chose this picture for today's post because sometimes "running" a small business feels like a marathon. (See what I did there?!)
It definitely takes all of your energy - physically, mentally, and emotionally.

This is not a complaint post. We chose this. We are happy to be here with you/ for you.
And yet sometimes I wonder how we still are here...

After all, we've opened The Gallery during the first year of the pandemic.
We've survived Fiona.
We've made it through times of inflation.
We've tackled all the small and big urgent, unexpected, terrifying things that were thrown at us as small business owners...

And we will continue to do so!
How?
I truly believe that is because Mike & I persevered together.
We are a great team with different strengths that complement each other.
Together, we have grit and persistence.
No one can do this alone. Find your partner(s), peeps!

This year, I decided to give you a reality check. 😝 Sounds worse than I mean it...
Every day this week, I will share one of my/ our realities as small business owners.
A little behind the scenes. A bit of our experience.

Today's topic: Staff.

It's the heart and soul of our business. Period. 💗

First, you build things and you work alone, in our case that was Mike & I.

Then you need people.
Especially in an operational biz like ours = the hospitality industry.

With that, you enter the roller coaster of hiring people.
Sometimes you find the right ones right away; often there are the ones that aren't a fit - no offense.
You lose people. You need to manage labour cost. You have to make hard and sometimes heartbreaking decisions. There is scheduling, staffing shortages, sick days, unexpected rushes, very slooooow times...

And any PEI business operates in a very seasonal environment. It's a cycle of building and readjusting teams. It's constant, it's tough.

Mike & I don't have any kids. But then again we have plenty. Cause our team becomes family.
It took us some time to find THE ONES with our vibe.
We hope you like them too. We think they are awesome. Thank you, Team Gallery. 🫶
