Wearing an orange shirt can’t be the only thing we do today.

September 30 isn’t just another day off work. It’s not an extra day to go hiking and see the larches.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation exists to honour residential school Survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and recognize the ongoing impacts of residential schools and colonization on Indigenous families and communities.

So if you have today off, please give some of that time back.

Listen to Indigenous people. Learn whose land you live on. Learn about the residential schools that operated near your community. Go to an event where Indigenous people are sharing their stories, language, culture and knowledge. Read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and choose something you can actually act on. Follow Indigenous educators, creators and organizations..not just today, but throughout the year.

And when today is over, keep going.

If you’re in the Bow Valley today come to artsPlace between 12–9pm. The community gathering includes an opening smudge and circle with Stoney Nakoda leadership, an Indigenous pop-up exhibition, educational resources, bannock and an Îyethka (Stoney Nakoda) language discussion and learning session.

And if you can’t attend something locally, the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation has learning resources and programming available online.

Wear the orange shirt, but listen to why you’re wearing it.
Truth comes before reconciliation.

Swipe through to see exactly what to expect at our Donut Decorating & Making New Friends event — from checking in and choosing your social battery sticker, to finding a table, decorating your donuts and what happens throughout the evening.

You can come alone or with someone.
You can talk, listen or pass.
You can take a break.
You can be nervous and still come.
There’s no expectation that you walk through the door already feeling comfortable or ready to make friends.

October 2nd we’re getting together with BanffLIFE and Banff Pride for an evening of donut decorating, connection and celebrating Pride.

Come alone or with a friend. Be chatty or awkward. There’s no expectation that you walk in knowing anyone or magically know how to make friends with strangers.

The event is facilitated, includes really good donuts and a room full of other 2SLGBTQIA+ folks and allies💛

Being a social media star is extremely time consuming, but being a cutie patootie is effortless for Heidi 😘

We don’t always see or understand experiences we have not lived ourselves. But when someone trusts us with their story, we have an opportunity to learn more about our neighbours and think about how we respond to the barriers they face.

What we learn through one conversation can influence the decisions we make, the way we lead and how we support people in our community.

Which is why we’re hosting a conversation to listen and understand our neighbours experiences.
