PUBLIC SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT

Freeze up is here and it’s only the beginning. This time of year, ice is very thin and isn’t safe.

Ice thickness is not uniform at this time of the year and won’t be for awhile especially in areas of high current(rapids, streams), ice can be very thin and one can readily fall through. The rivers are swift and very cold.

These conditions are extremely hazardous at this time and falling through the ice can have tragic consequences.

Parents and Guardians, please keep an eye on your children and remind them to not play near the river or lakes.

It’s that time of year where freeze up has started. Here’s what you should know:

Freeze up started with a few inches of ice and a blanket of snow. This blanket of snow acts like an insulation which prevents rivers/lakes etc from the freezing up properly. These conditions are extremely hazardous at this time and falling through the ice can have tragic consequences.

Ice thickness is not uniform at this time of the year. In areas of high current(rapids, streams), ice can be very thin and one can readily fall through. The rivers are swift and very cold.

Be cautious and avoid going on ice as much as possible until cold weather really sets in.

Good morning everyone! Here’s what you should know when you are in the kitchen.

Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol don’t use the stove or stovetop.

Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.

If you are simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.

Keep anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — away from your stovetop.

Have a “kid-free zone” of at least 3 feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried.

Grease and fat fires are a leading cause of home fires in Canada, so be extra careful when doing this kind of cooking. Here's what to do if grease in a pot or pan catches fire:

Smother the flames by covering the pan with a lid. Do not remove the lid until the pan is completely cooled.

Turn off the heat immediately.

If there isn’t any fire extinguisher near by. Use baking soda (flour can be explosive) on shallow grease fires.

Never turn on the overhead fan, as this could spread the fire.

Never throw water on a grease fire.

It is always good to be ready, here’s a few tips to prepare for a house fire:

1. Install the right number of smoke alarms. Test them once a month and replace the batteries at least once a year.

2. Teach children what smoke alarms sound like and what to do when they hear one.

3. Ensure that all household members know two ways to escape from every room of your home and know the family meeting spot outside of your home.

4. Establish a family emergency communications plan and ensure that all household members know who to contact if they cannot find one another.

5. Practice escaping from your home at least twice a year. Press the smoke alarm test button or yell “Fire“ to alert everyone that they must get out.

6. Make sure everyone knows how to call 9-1-1 or any other emergency you may have in your community.
