ভূমিকম্পের আরবি শব্দ হচ্ছে 'যিলযাল'। সূরা আয-যিলযালে আল্লাহ সুবহানাহু তায়ালা কিয়ামতের দিন যমিনের ভূমিকম্প নিয়ে কথা বলেছেন। তিনি এ সূরার শুরুতে বলছেন,
"যখন প্রবল প্রকম্পনে যমিনকে প্রকম্পিত করা হবে। আর যমিন তার অভ্যন্তর থেকে বোঝা বের করে দেবে এবং মানুষ জিজ্ঞাসা করবে, যমিনের কি হলো?"
সূরা আল-হাজ্জ এর মধ্যে আল্লাহতালা আরো বলেন,
"হে মানুষ, তোমরা তোমাদের রব কে ভয় করো। নিশ্চয়ই কিয়ামতের প্রকম্পন এক ভয়ংকর ব্যাপার"।

কিয়ামতের দিন ভূমিকম্প হওয়ার বিষয়ে আল্লাহ সুবহানাহু তায়ালা মানুষকে সতর্ক করেছেন। কিয়ামতের ভূমিকম্পের তুলনায় পৃথিবীর ভূমিকম্প ততটা মারাত্মক নয়। তারপরেও আমরা ভূমিকম্পে প্রচন্ড ভয় পেয়ে যাই, দিশেহারা হয়ে যাই।

আমাদেরকে মনে রাখতে হবে মৃত্যু তো আমাদের হবেই। ভূমিকম্প ও অন্য যেকোনো কারণে আমাদের মৃত্যু ও প্রাণক্ষয় হতে পারে। তাই পৃথিবীর ভূমিকম্পের জন্যও আমাদের সতর্কতা প্রয়োজন। একটু আগে বাংলাদেশে যে ভূমিকম্পটি হলো সেটি আমাদেরকে সে কথা আবারও স্মরণ করিয়ে দিয়েছে। তবে কিয়ামতের মহা প্রলয় ও ভূমিকম্প নিয়ে আমাদের আরো সচেতন হওয়া প্রয়োজন এবং সার্বিক দীনী প্রস্তুতি নিয়ে সতর্ক থাকা প্রয়োজন।
বাংলাদেশে ভূমিকম্পে যারা ইতোমধ্যে মারা গিয়েছেন আল্লাহর দরবারে তাদের জন্য দোয়া করছি এবং যারা আহত হয়েছেন তাদের প্রতি সহানুভূতি ব্যক্ত করছি। সর্বোপরি সকল অবস্থায় সবরের এখতিয়ার করার তৌফিক আল্লাহ সুবহানাহুওয়া তা'আলার কাছে কামনা করছি।
