The History of Physiotherapy – Part 2
From referral to first contact
There was a time when seeing a physiotherapist usually started with a trip to the doctor.
For much of the profession's history, physiotherapists worked predominantly under medical referral. But as physiotherapy education, clinical training and professional autonomy developed, so did the physiotherapist's role.
Today, physiotherapists in Australia are first-contact practitioners. That means you don't need a doctor's referral to see a physiotherapist privately.
Physiotherapists can assess and diagnose musculoskeletal problems, determine whether physiotherapy is appropriate, and recognise when further medical assessment or investigation may be needed.
It's quite an evolution from the rehabilitation departments of the 1940s.
From rehabilitation provider to first point of contact — physiotherapy has come a long way.

DID YOU KNOW? The World Wars helped shape modern physiotherapy
Physiotherapy looked very different 100 years ago. Starting out in 1906 as the Australian Massage Association and becoming the profession of physiotherapy in 1939.
This evolution occurred during the First and Second World Wars, enormous numbers of injured servicemen needed more than medical and surgical treatment — they also needed help to regain movement, strength and function.
Physiotherapists became an important part of that rehabilitation, working with people recovering from fractures, orthopaedic injuries and other serious wounds. Australian physiotherapists served during World War II in military hospitals both overseas and at home.
The war years helped shift treatment away from predominantly passive approaches such as massage, heat and electrotherapy towards active rehabilitation, exercise and restoring function — principles that remain central to physiotherapy today.
From rehabilitating wounded soldiers to helping today's patients return to work, sport and everyday life, getting people moving and functioning again has been at the heart of physiotherapy for generations.
