I've just had the pleasure of a week in Brisbane for the first time, at the International Cake Show Australia with ACADA, helping out behind the scenes and meeting up with lots of cake friends new and old. I have had a wonderful time. To say I have come home invigorated, inspired and in awe of the talent on display, is a massive understatement, and I am looking forward to all the bigger and better things that are coming! What do you do to look after yourself? Especially at the moment, we all need to make sure to look after ourselves extra carefully, it's such a stressful time for everybody right now.
Well. I have been attempting a "couch to 10k" running programme for about 4 years now.... I tend to get halfway through it and stop! So I've set myself a challenge for this "shutdown" period where I will actually complete the C25K version! (Thank you Rundouble app <3)
I love running. Well, I really do not run, it's more of a stop and start speed walk. So I'll rephrase. I love getting outside. The fresh air. The silence (apart from my laboured breathing, sorry about that on the video LOL). That short time each day where nobody wants anything from me (except my legs and lungs screaming at me to stop). That "just me" time. That solitude to get my thoughts in order....

This is my favourite waste reducing technique - keeping chickens!
These are some of my girls - here we have Bertha, Marilyn, Mavis, Ethel, Eric, Bob & Dave. Yes, they are all girls 🤣
I've had chooks in my garden for as long as I can remember, it used to be so I could use the freshest bestest eggs in my baking, but that's not allowed here in SA unless I jump through a lot of expensive hoops. And for 8 chooks worth of eggs, that was not worth the expense. So, we keep these eggs for home use - luckily, as a family, we eat a LOT of eggs, cos they're just so delicious!
We feed them our scraps and veggie peels that would otherwise get chucked in the bin, and when we clean them out, it gets shovelled ready for using on the veggie beds over winter - win win! And they're such funny little ladies too, I could sit watching them for hours, they're so therapeutic!

If you've never had to, you wouldn't believe how hard it is to come up with something unique to call your business, and a logo to match! I think I drove all my friends crackers before Tasty Bakes was first launched, trying to decide on our name and logo.
I love the combination of turquoise, pink and brown, so they've always been my chosen colours. When I rebranded as Tasty Bakes & Wedding Cakes, I had someone draw me a beautiful wedding cake, added in some flowers and a pretty cake stand, and then I chose all the font and colour combos. I make sure everything matches the logo: website, social media, business cards, stickers, packaging and even postage labels, and I'm about to order new matching Tasty Bakes aprons too.
Every single person who sees my business card comments on how pretty they are, and what an impact they make. Someone in a supermarket once ordered a cake from me because they loved my logo so much - how cool??!! I've also had several people at wedding expos give me their order because of the high quality look of my display - they can tell that if I take that much care on a table full of samples and dummies, I'm going to really take care with their order, which is absolutely true.
I take all my product photos myself, on the same table (although the table has actually changed a couple of times over the years!) with good light (whenever possible!) and a nice clear background, so that people can see that I am consistent with high standards in all aspects of my work.
I am always courteous and professional in all aspects of running my business (except for that one time at home when I dropped a whole box of finished cake pops. Oh, and also that time I dropped a tray of macaron shells. Then I swore. Lots!!! But apart from that.... ;) )
I think it's so important to have a personal recognisable brand, and to offer consistency and reliability.
