One of the most enjoyable meals of my life.
Table on the street, temperature in the high teens and light wind blowing. The sense of place no doubt contributed, with the music of Parisian conversations as they strolled past the background to the meal. Diminished marginally by the Gallois smoke from the lady on the table adjacent and the intermittent abrasive intrusion from a passing resident of Trumpville.
Commenced with baguette and butter, radishes and olives and a carafe of Bordeaux.
Then soupe à l’oignon (the secret is not too much onion and heavy on the gruyere).
Them Steak à la tartare, served with dressed butter lettuce and pomme frites. Part way through a manager wanders by my table and glances down. Without a word he glides away and returns with bottles of Worcester and Tabasco sauce which he quietly places on my table , smiles, and drifts away. Service and flavour at next level.
As my main meal for the day, decided to have dessert. “Babette’s Feast” being a favourite film it must be rhum baba - the waiter placing the bottle of rum on the table so I could help myself. When he poured the glass of Sauterne he paused…then added some more.
Cafe to finish.
