With card surcharge changes now in effect across Australia, we wanted to share a few thoughts with our community.

At The Portuguese Bakery, we’ve never charged a card surcharge.
In fact, we’ve also never added a weekend or a public holiday surcharge.
These are costs we’ve always chosen to absorb ourselves.

We’re a small local bakery, serving local families and the wider community around us. To us, good service should feel simple, fair and honest, and the price you see should be the price you pay.

Thank you to everyone who stops by for a coffee, a loaf, a tart, or simply comes in to say hello.
Your support allows us to keep doing what we love, right here in our community. And we never take that for granted. 🤎

Dark caramel on top, then silky and soft the whole way down. Rich without being heavy — the sort of thing that's gone before you meant it to be.

Best with a coffee. $6.50 a slice, whole cakes to order.

Hey community,

We're looking for a weekday bakery assistant, someone with bakery or café experience, good with customers, and above all reliable.

On a typical day you'll be serving coffee, tarts and pastries, packing orders, restocking the fridge, plus washing up and getting trays out of the oven. It's a small shop, so you’d essentially be looking after the front of house on your own.

We'd need you available Wednesday to Friday at a minimum, around 20 hours per week.

To apply, message us or email your resume to [email protected]
Interviews begin this week for all shortlisted applicants.

Bolo de Laranja.

In Portugal, every family has their own version of this one — a simple orange cake, baked in a tray, soaked in orange syrup while it's still hot from the oven, and stays soft for days.

Ours starts with six whole oranges. The zest gets rubbed into the sugar by hand until the whole bowl smells like an orchard. Then freshly squeezed juice goes into the batter, and more of it into the syrup we pour over the moment it comes out of the oven.

No icing. No decoration. Just orange.

Available to order now.

A Wrap up of our Portuguese Tarts Giveaway

A lot of you asked how it went, and honestly it’s so much better than we expected.
74 local businesses and organisations, including offices, schools, hospitals, medical practices, shared a total of 812 tarts.

4 weeks on the road gave us the opportunity to meet with, and to deliver a little sweetness to so many hardworking local businesses around the Shire, which meant more than anything else to us.

Right now, we could use a little bit of rest and get ready for the Father’s Day. But if your team missed out, feel free to reach out anytime, as we are always happy to meet someone new.

Progress Update - 1,000 Tarts for the Shire

Thank you to every business and group who reached out to us, and here's where it actually took us.

Two weeks ago we launched tart giveaway to local businesses. Since then, we visited local schools, GP clinics, a dental surgery, childcare centres, auto workshops, a car dealership, a flooring showroom, a law firm, an accountant, a bank branch, a physio, an MRI department, and local hospitals.

We delivered to Gymea, Gymea Bay, Kirrawee, Sutherland, Miranda, Caringbah, Sylvania, Engadine, Kareela, Grays Point, Oyster Bay, Taren Point, with the tarts still warm in people’s hands, typically within one hour out of the oven. And here’s what came back:

A teacher who'd been buying from us for a while:
"When I normally buy the tarts they're room temp. But having them warm — omg, next level!!

A long-time customer, on the pastry:
"Distinct crunch. No soggy bottom. Structural integrity held firm."

Oyster Bay Public School Staff:
"They kept our energy up for our big Athletics Carnival and all the staff were coming back for seconds."

An accounting office in Caringbah:
"So fresh and warm and the pastry was so crunchy. We do cakes for each birthday normally, but now a few of us would prefer tarts instead!"

Fresh & crisp pastry paired with warm custard, that's the whole point of delivery service. Nothing sits on our shelf for long, but we bake to delivery orders, so they arrive at their best. Same tart — caught at the right moment.

1 week of deliveries left to go: 26 to 28 August (Last order 5pm Monday 24/08)
Some tarts for your workplace? Show this post to your boss and let’s get in touch!

One last thing. We're keeping some of the final week for emergency services — ambos, police, fire, SES, RFS. If you work out of a local station, get in touch.
You're on when we're closed, so you almost never get one of these straight out of the oven, and we'd like to change that

Two mechanics chased me down the street last week.

Not for the reason you'd think — they came out of the workshop to give me a thumbs up as I drove off. Best moment of the week.

🥧 1,000 TARTS FOR THE SHIRE — WEEK 2

New here? Short version: we're giving away up to 1,000 Portuguese tarts to workplaces around the Shire this month. Free, nothing to buy.

35 doors, over 300 tarts so far: workshops, clinics, childcare centres, an office manager who set it up as a surprise for her boss, and a daughter who arranged a box for her dad's team without telling him. One box went to another bakery — bakers know what a 3am start feels like. Week 2 is already filling up — more clinics, and we're working on a few hospitals and a couple of local schools.

📍 ONE THING TO BE CLEAR ABOUT: it's the Shire only. We hand-deliver these ourselves, straight out of the 10am bake, so we can only go as far as they stay at their best. Sorry to everyone further out — it's the freshness, not you.

So if you work somewhere local and want a box for the team: message us with a contact name and a day (Wed, Thur or Fri). We don’t hand them over the counter —We will personally bring them to you.

And for everyone else, thank you! We’ve read every one of your replies and your support are taking us further into the Shire than we expected.

Plenty left. See you out there.

We've prepped 1,000 extra tarts this month.
We're not selling a single one.

1,000 TARTS FOR THE SHIRE — WEEK 1

We've just reworked our recipe, and we reckon these are the best pastéis de nata you'll eat anywhere. Rather than tell you that, we'd rather you tasted one for yourself.

Most are going out to workplaces around the Shire — boxes of 6, delivered straight from our 10am bake, still warm.

🏢 RUN A LOCAL BUSINESS? Message us — phone, email or WhatsApp.
Just a contact name and which day suits: Wed, Thu or Fri. That's all we need. We'll bring them over.

👇 NOT A BUSINESS? Tag the team that deserves a box. The clinic, the childcare centre, the worksite, the office that never gets a treat. Tag them — they'll take it from there.

First boxes go out Wednesday (05/08). We'll keep going every week
until the 1,000 are gone.
