Fun fact!
Did you know that Dutch boterkoek isn’t much like an ordinary cookie?
The name combines:
boter (butter) + koek (cake/cookie).
But don’t expect a small, crispy cookie.
Boterkoek is baked as one large, flat bake and then cut into pieces. The inside is soft, dense and rich.
And the name is accurate: butter is a key ingredient, together with flour and sugar.
Boterkoek also has a long history. Sources about a 17th-century Amsterdam biscuit shop already mention boterkoek among many other types of koek.
Thinking of taking a big piece because it’s “just a cookie”? You might want to start small — boterkoek is very rich!
Have you ever tried Dutch boterkoek?
Zeg maar Nederlands – Learn natural Dutch and feel at home in the Netherlands.

Boterkoek is behoorlijk machtig!
Heb jij weleens Nederlandse boterkoek gegeten?
