Artisan Focus | Ryuouen 柳桜園茶舗 | Master Blender

For many people (even in Japan), “green tea” has meant bottled drinks - not matcha.

Matcha isn’t just ground tea but a composition.

Each master blender works like a perfumer. Blending different cultivars, some sweeter, some more aromatic, some deeper in umami, some brighter in colour and layering them into a single, balanced profile.

Built on instinct, refined over decades.
The recipe? Rarely disclosed.

Tucked just off Teramachi Street, Ryuouen Tea Shop is easy to miss. For over a century, they’ve quietly supplied tea to temples and practitioners of the Japanese Tea Ceremony.

Their tea is still sold by weight, over the counte as it always has been.

We found them the old way, through people, through trust. Being able to bring their tea outside Japan is something we don’t take lightly.

Ryuouen chooses to stay deliberately small.
No scaling for trend. No compromise on quality.
No online store. No marketing. And yet, recently through social platform, a new audience has found them.

What Ryuouen represents a slower, more intentional way of drinking tea shaped by craft, not convenience.

When we visited last month, they were serving Kozakura 小桜, a seasonal blend marking the arrival of spring. For Simply Native, they’ve created Ikka Goyo 一華五葉.

Join us at our Surry Hills store for tastings, we’d love to introduce you to our world.

一華五葉
Ikka Goyo • One flower, Five Fold Grace

The name Ikka Goyo is inspired by the magnolia, our brand flower - a symbol of quiet strength and graceful reach. One bloom, unfolding into five leaves, representing the spread of a single culture across five continents.

This blend was created especially for us by Ryuouen(柳桜園), a producer that has been part of our story since the very beginning, back in our original Cleveland Street store.

Established in 1875, Ryuouen is an unusual presence among Kyoto’s historic teahouses. The entire operation is run by just nine people. They do not sell online. They sell exclusively in their own Kyoto store, opening pop-ups only a few times a year. Their way of selling tea has not changed with time.

At Ryuouen, it takes one full hour to grind just 40 grams of matcha. The tea is sold by weight, measured carefully at the counter, a practice that reflects patience rather than efficiency.

Yukino has long admired Ryuouen, not only for the depth and clarity of their matcha, but for the way they have chosen to remain small, careful, and uncompromising. The rest of the team first encountered their tea by chance, brought back from Japan as a small souvenir. One sip was enough to stay with us. When we reached out, they told us simply:

“To maintain quality, we choose to remain small.”

After sharing our own philosophy and long-standing commitment to matcha, they agreed to allow us to share their tea in Australia.

Ikka Goyo is a celebration of tradition, through connection, through presence, through continuity. Tea bowls were brought together by friends, each crafted by hand, gathered around the same room, sharing the moment.

We are honoured to share this tea with you.

At Simply Native, we place great importance on who we choose to build the future with. One of those cherished partners is Rokubei Gama, a distinguished Kyoto kiln with a legacy dating back to 1771.

Yukino, along with Rokubei’s Hiroaki Kiyomizu, a ninth-generation potter developed and refined one of Simply Native’s most loved pieces, our Matcha Bowl, through a shared process of experimentation and dialogue.

Yukino and Hiroaki first met in 2021, introduced by a mutual friend. Although Hiroaki was widely expected to inherit and lead Rokubei Kiln as the ninth-generation head, his work has always reflected a warm, approachable spirit that resonates deeply with those around him. His creations embody both a strong sense of craftsmanship and a distinct personal voice.

In choosing to pursue his own artistic path, Hiroaki passed the role of head of the kiln to his younger brother and began a new journey as the founder of Rokusho. Simply Native is proud to continue supporting Hiroaki as he forges this next chapter, honoring tradition while shaping a future guided by individuality and creative expression.

Hiroaki graciously opened his kiln to welcome Yukino at the last minute during her brief trip to Kyoto last year, on a Sunday evening - without the slightest hesitation. This quiet gesture speaks volumes about the warmth of his character and the generosity with which he shares his craft.

Before the rush of Toshi no Ichi next week, Yukino slipped home to Amami Ōshima for a quiet pause - salt air, gentle warmth, and the rhythm of island life.

Her days have been simple: helping her mother prepare the catch of the day, early year-end celebrations, and watching her father between crafts. Now retired, he still repairs Oshima Tsumugi, the island’s hand-woven silk dyed in mud. By night, he a regional folk art reminiscent of kai-awase, giving new life to the shells he has collected over a lifetime.

“Shells are proof the shellfish lived. By turning them into art, I can bring them back to life.

The shells deserve respect - it would be disrespectful to cut corners,” he says. Every tiny costume, every miniature landscape, every shell is handmade, dyed, and placed with care.

A quiet glimpse into family, craft, and island traditions.

Toshi no Ichi (literally “year-market”) has been held at temples and shrines across Japan for centuries. Traditionally, people visited these markets to buy decorations, food, and lucky charms to welcome the New Year.

Famous markets, like the Sensō-ji Toshi no Ichi in Asakusa (illustrated here by Katsukawa Shunko), were bustling with shoppers and street food stalls, often captured in Edo-period woodblock prints.

Today, we bring this festive, community-focused spirit to our store in Surry Hills - blending Japanese tradition with Australia’s holiday spirit.

From antiques, auspicious charms, and handcrafted artisanal pieces to seasonal edible treats, it’s the perfect place for festive shopping and even Secret Santa.

Toshi no Ichi runs from Nov 29 – Jan 11 with weekend live performances and collaborations with your favourite local cafes throughout. Schedule to be announced shortly.

See you soon 🎄🇯🇵

With global demand surging, many farmers have begun releasing their own single-origin or farm-blend matcha - tightening the tencha supply once reserved for long-established brands.

In Uji, where most tencha farmers are now in their seventies, many skipped the second harvest this year due to extreme summer heat - cutting yields and driving auction prices to record highs.

Unlike rice, tea is treated as a commodity with no government regulation, leaving it fully exposed to market forces.

While farmers are finally seeing fair returns, producers and blenders - the artisans who craft balance and flavor - are struggling to stay afloat. The cost of raw tea has tripled, and even with rising matcha prices, their margins continue to shrink.

Our Mission

Simply Native is planning to lease and restore abandoned tea fields in Wazuka and secure farms in Uji, cared for by a new generation of growers. These fields will form the foundation of a sustainable tea supply system - from soil to bowl.

We stand for quality, transparency, and responsibility - even if it means smaller batches.

Our mission is to protect Japan’s tea heritage, empower future growers, and connect conscious drinkers to the true craft of tea - creating a new model for sustainable sourcing and collaboration.

Follow our journey as we grow roots in Uji - nurturing tea, people, and generations to come. 🌱

Host your next dinner party on the ethereal “AWA” series by Yamaheigama (やま平窯) - a collection that captures the quiet poetry of porcelain and the fleeting beauty of bubbles.

Each piece is formed through an intricate process: while the potter’s wheel turns, delicate pigment is misted across the base, then layers of real foam are applied to create that airy, organic texture.

Yamaheigama, a renowned kiln nestled in Arita, Saga Prefecture, continues Japan’s centuries-old porcelain legacy with modern refinement and timeless grace.

Rooted in traditional Arita techniques yet ever-evolving, they embody a pursuit of perfection - where innovation meets heritage, and craftsmanship becomes art.

Also known for their ultra-thin “Egg Shell” series, Yamahei’s creations invite light, texture, and tranquility to your table.
