We may have gone overboard with options for this backyard studio design (yes five!) buuuuut each one had the client's vibe in mind. We played with everything from plywood to thermolaminated profiled doors to hit that warm, homely (but modern) feel.

What's that floorboard?⁠
Our first ever project, we used gorgeous solid timber blackbutt floorboards. They were so comfy for bare feet, enduring and did I mention gorgeous?⁠

If you're choosing a floorboard for your reno/extension, there's 3 main types to pick from:⁠
⁠
$ Laminate - This is the cheap and cheerful version of the natural products. The surface of these boards is a printed veneer to look like timber planks. The downside is the repetition of pattern (being a print) and it cant be sanded or refinished if damaged.⁠
⁠
$$ Timber veneer - The top layer of these boards is 2-6mm of solid timber so from the surface it looks like a solid board. These have good moisture resistance due to the engineered core. They also come in a great range of species, looks and tones.⁠
⁠
$$$ Solid timber - These beauties are solid planks of natural timber and are also the longest lasting choice. Nuff said.⁠

Have you asked yourself: Where did your home extension budget benchmark come from?

No doubt in today's age of information overload, you've probably gotten an idea of your project cost from one source or another.

Most likely this benchmark was from the FIRST source you came across. Our brain automatically anchors that first piece of information as the benchmark for all future pricing info it receives. And it's all subconscious - nifty huh?

This could work out really well if that first source was truly a similar comparison to your situation, project location and project scope. But more often than not, it may not be completely relevant to your project.

If this is the case, you may be working with an unrealistic budget which could end in wasted time, money and effort. Not to mention the disappointment of finding out after a lengthy design and permitting process that your budget was way under 🤕

Now you're aware of this, take note of where the numbers in your head came from and double check that the source is comparable to your project in the following ways:

✔️The size and scope of project is similar to what you want to do

✔️The quality of the finishes is similar to what you want to achieve

✔️The location is comparable to your property (not in a different state or country!)

✔️The project process is similar to what you will be doing. Ie. Not a TV show (they get lots of sponsorships and free product), owner builder (unless this is what you're doing too) etc.
