Abandoned animals are being dumped at pounds and shelters following reckless pandemic buying. Many of these animals came from backyard breeders and puppy farms, meaning people not only supported cruel breeding practices, but now lives are on death row.
A recent survey found that 46% of people between 18-34 regretted getting an animal during lockdown. Animals are not toys. Their lives are not disposable - and our legislation must reflect this.
Today we start our work with rescue groups and pounds to develop legislative changes to reduce the number of homeless animals, end the killing of treatable animals, and stop the overpopulation issues that create these situations in the first place. This is a long neglected area of legislative reform, and many animals have suffered and died from lack of proper laws.
