Meet Maddie 🦖☕️

Our resident Barista Queen and all-round hospitality superstar. After what feels like 1,000 years in hospo, joining Butterken feels like home. A place built on good people, shared values, and creating something special together.

Maddie especially loves that her workplaces aligns with her sustainability values, and that she's serving healthier, authentic German delights daily.

Maddie thrives in the hustle of bakery life, keeping the coffees flowing, jumping in wherever she's needed, and somehow staying cool under pressure.

Her Butterken must-have? The cheddar stick. There may or may not be a secret freezer stash at home for emergency cheese-need situations.

When she's not at the bakery, you'll find her op-shopping, line dancing, reading classic novels, or studying to become a secondary school teacher.

And if you're after a Mornington Peninsula recommendation, Fishies Beach will always have her heart.

We proudly serve their Progress St. Blend: a beautiful combination of chocolate, blackberry and plum notes that we completely fell in love with ❤️

Through their Every Cup Counts initiative, they've built a genuine partnership with smallholder coffee producers on Mt Elgon in Uganda. By paying fair prices, sharing risk, and investing in people, they're proving that great coffee and ethical business can go hand in hand 👏

That vision led to the creation of Zukuka Bora Coffee Company, now one of Uganda's finest coffee producers, supporting more than 1,500 smallholder farmers through their charity, The Cup That Counts.

It's a mission that resonates deeply with us. We believe the best food and coffee come with stories worth telling, and that the choices we make as a business ripple far beyond the day-to-day.

We want you to see how it's made.

That's why our bakery is built from glass. You can watch exactly what goes into every loaf, pretzel, and pastry we make 🥨🍞

🚫 No closed doors.
🚫 No mystery ingredients.
🚫 No hiding.

Our sourdough bread? Only natural ingredients: flour, water, salt and malt.

You'll see us using certified organic flour from Wholegrain Milling, Mount Zero olive oil, Peppo Farms seeds, Australian sea salt, and real butter from Lard Ass just acorss the bay.

Sounds simple because........it is!

Rich, savory, and delicately spiced Sopressa (a premium, artisan salami hand-crafted in Sydney). Fresh sliced tomatoes. Heidi Farm Tilst cheese from Tasmania. Cultured butter from the Ballarine Peninsula. Small batches made carefully and fresh throughout the day.

Last call to get your mits on our Raspberry Drop Cookies 🍪

She's a soft, crumbly shortbread with a layer of marzipan dusted in a light blanket of sugar, with a bright raspberry jam heart. The powdered sugar melts the moment it touches your lips. She is crunchy and buttery, yet soft and chewy. Then the raspberry jam comes through, vivid, and just tart enough to balance all the flavours and sweetness.

Simple, beautiful, and really, REALLY delicious 🤤👅 Which makes it all the harder to say goodbye, but she must go to make space for something new (👀exciting).

You've got a week to try her, so if you've been meaning to come in, or you simply love a great cookie, now is the time!

There’s something pretty special about walking into Butterken early in the morning — the smell of fresh pastry, warm sourdough, cinnamon, butter and coffee filling the bakery before you’ve even made it to the counter.

Did you know we also serve a beautiful dine-in platter for two? A generous spread of cold meats, cheeses, seasonal veggies, eggs, jam, butter and a selection of our sourdoughs and rolls made fresh in-house daily 🧀🥖✨
