Last week, Kim had the opportunity to attend the International Congress on Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) in Melbourne.

You might wonder what a child-safety conference has to do with tutoring. For us, quite a lot.

Children learn best when they feel safe, heard, respected and confident. The Congress brought together experts, researchers and, importantly, young people themselves to talk about how the adults and organisations around children can do better.

For Kim, it was a chance to bring those ideas back into our Kip centres and think about the experience we create for every child who walks through our doors.

Because great tutoring isn’t only about improving English and maths. It’s also about building relationships, listening to children and creating a place where they feel comfortable to learn, make mistakes and have a go.

We want our centres to be places where children can learn, grow and feel like they belong. 💙

We often hear from parents who know their child is struggling, but aren’t quite sure where the gaps are.

That’s why we start with a free assessment.

It helps us understand what your child already knows and where they need some extra support. From there, one of our qualified teachers teaches the skills, works through misunderstandings and keeps track of their progress.

It’s not about giving children more work. It’s about making sure they understand what they’re learning and helping them build confidence along the way.

Assess. Teach. Track.

That’s the Kip difference. 💙

What should your child know before starting Year 7?

Every child is different, but these examples can help parents understand some of the skills students will use in secondary school.

📖 Reading

Your child should be able to read a short story, article or set of instructions and explain:

✅ What is the main idea?
✅ What important details support it?
✅ Why did a character act that way?
✅ What information is implied but not directly stated?

✍️ Writing

Your child should be able to write a clear paragraph that includes:

✅ A topic sentence
✅ Supporting details or evidence
✅ Correct punctuation and mostly accurate spelling
✅ A concluding sentence

For example: “School uniforms are helpful because they make students feel part of the school community…”

➗ Mathematics

Your child should be developing confidence with questions such as:

✅ What is 7 × 8?
✅ What is ¾ of 20?
✅ Write 0.6 as a percentage.
✅ A $50 item is reduced by 20%—what is the new price?
✅ A recipe serves four people. How much is needed for six people?
✅ A bus leaves at 8:35 am and arrives at 9:20 am. How long is the trip?

🧠 Problem-solving

Your child should be able to:

✅ Identify what a question is asking
✅ Select the correct operation or strategy
✅ Show their working
✅ Check whether their answer is reasonable

🎒 Independent learning

For example, can your child:

✅ Follow three instructions in the correct order?
✅ Bring the right materials to a lesson?
✅ Begin a task without constant prompting?
✅ Check and correct their work?
✅ Ask for help when they do not understand?

Your child does not need to get every example right. Difficulties simply show where extra teaching and practice may help.

At Kip McGrath, a qualified teacher assesses your child’s current English or maths skills and creates an individual program to address gaps and build confidence.

Why is paying for qualified teachers worth it?

Because at Kip, tutoring is teacher-led.

You’re not paying for someone to sit beside your child or teach them what they need for that worksheet or concept. You’re investing in a qualified teacher who understands how children learn, how to identify gaps and how to teach the concepts needed to fill them.

Every student at Kip is always working on their own personalised program.

Even though students learn in a small group, they are not all doing the same work. One student might be strengthening multiplication, another working on fractions, while another is building reading comprehension skills.

Our teachers explicitly teach, check understanding, provide corrective teaching and know when a student needs to revisit, revise or move forward.

The Kip system supports this systematic approach by giving students repeated opportunities to learn, practise, revisit and consolidate their skills.

And there’s another reason we value small-group learning.

Ultimately, students need to take what they learn at Kip back into a classroom. They learn to work independently, stay focused with others around them and ask for help when they need it without becoming dependent on someone sitting beside them.

That’s the Kip Difference.

Teacher-led.
Qualified teachers.
Always their own personalised program.
Finding and filling the gaps.
Revisit, revise and consolidate.

Have you ever wondered why we don’t recommend one-on-one tutoring? 🤔

At Kip McGrath, we absolutely believe in individualised learning, but that doesn’t mean students need to learn in isolation.

Our students work from a personalised learning program, designed around exactly what they need. Our qualified teachers explicitly teach new concepts, provide opportunities to practise, give feedback and step in with corrective teaching when needed.

But they do this within a small-group environment.

Why? Because ultimately, students need to take their new skills and confidence back into a classroom.

Learning alongside other students helps children practise working independently, staying focused when others are around, asking for help when they need it and applying strategies without having an adult sitting beside them every second.

We want our students to become less dependent on support, not more dependent on it.

Personalised learning. Qualified teachers. Small groups. Growing independence.

That’s the Kip difference. 💙📚

Why shouldn't tutoring places look exactly like a school classroom?

Our centres are designed to make that transition smooth.

From school → Kip.
From whole-class learning → personalised learning.
From another classroom → their learning space.
From "I have to do more schoolwork" → "I'm here to work on my goals."
That is why our environment feels different.
Different by design.

And while the environment doesn't replace the teacher, the relationship or the learning program, research gives us good reason to believe that where learning happens deserves our attention too.
