During the design process we work closely with owners to develop the interiors using 3D visualisations such as these of the Kitchen, Bathroom and central Hall in our Alphington project. This 2-storey, contemporary addition to a heritage home is currently under construction and we can’t wait to see these beautiful spaces come to life.

Throughout the design process we use 3D visualisation tools to explore different external forms and materials with our clients. We are currently exploring different rooflines and brick colours with our clients for this single level addition for a family of 4, to a Californian Bungalow in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. It’s so helpful for our clients to see options and visualise the project well beyond floorplans.

This International Women’s Day we wish to acknowledge our forebearer, Ruth Alsop (born in Kew in 1879). The first Victorian woman to qualify as an architect in 1912.

Ruth began work at her younger brother Rodney’s firm, Klingender & Alsop from 1907 until 1916. At this time, family pressures saw her leave the firm to look after her parents, who were both in poor health.

Ruth Alsop remained registered as an architect with the RVIA until 1927, but there is little evidence of any her designs being built during this time.

Rodney Alsop gained considerable prominence as a designer of Arts and Craft style dwellings - for Ruth, however, there was little acclaim. She designed the modest weatherboard house in Dorset Road, Croydon, where she lived with her sisters, Edith and Florance. The architect, the artist and the writer lived there together from the late 1930s until the 1950s.

Ruth Alsop lived until 1976, with her groundbreaking role in architecture largely overlooked. In 2005 a Canberra street was named after her (Ruth Alsop Lane, Greenway, ACT 2900) to commemorate her achievements.

As a woman, family and domestic duties were seen to come first and her career fell away. As such, the contrast between Rodney and Ruth’s career paths is significant.

How grateful we are for the changes to the profession that we know today, and we honour the women who have paved the way before us.

Richard and Sarah are honoured to be made Fellows of the Royal Institute of Architects.

This recognises significant contribution to the profession outside of design, project delivery and running a busy practice.

Sarah is actively involved in the architectural community. She currently serves as a Victorian Chapter Councillor and is a member of several key committees in the fields or Tertiary Education, and Gender Equity and Diversity. She also contributes to government-lead working groups such as the Domestic Building Acts Review, and Rescode Codification Workshops. She has served as a Juror for RAIA Awards, and currently co-chairs the Medium Practice Forum, reflecting her commitment to mentoring and supporting the next generation of architects.

Richard is deeply committed to the profession through his involvement in various industry groups. For many years he has served on the Vic/Tas Committee of the Association of Consulting Architects and has taken a leadership role in the ACA’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Forum. Richard is a current ARBV examiner, and involved with the VBA-lead Design Standards Working Group.

Celebrating the opening of the Wodonga Senior Secondary College Gymnasium. One of a number of projects we have worked together with the school on over the past 11 years. Fabulous to see the kids utilising this space. Congratulations to the whole team who have contributed to creating this wonderful facility for WSSC.
