As we head toward the end of 2024, I find myself facing a tough decision about Crumb Together, a decision I’ve wrestled with for a long time.
The truth is, the economy is tough, and it’s hard to compete with alternatives. Many people prefer to pay $2–$3 per cookie from someone using fondant, perhaps in an unregistered or uninsured kitchen. (Fun fact: registering a home kitchen in Baw Baw costs over $500 annually).
But royal icing cookies are different. They take an incredible amount of time, precision, and care. Charging $6.50 to $8 per cookie might sound high, but it doesn’t even begin to reflect the labour involved—not to mention covering costs or earning a proper hourly wage.
I started this business as a creative outlet during a difficult chapter in my life, when I was battling postnatal anxiety and depression after the birth of my first child. Decorating cookies gave me calm, focus, and purpose.
Over time, though, what began as a source of peace has turned into something else. Orders are fewer. The hours spent brainstorming, marketing, and trying to evolve the business feel endless. And despite all the work, the reality is that Crumb Together has operated at a loss every year since it began—even in its best year, pre-pandemic.
Because I haven’t hit the $20,000 threshold for business income in any financial year, I don’t qualify for tax deductions, so I pay tax on every dollar I bring in. Add to that the rising costs of materials, registration, and running a legitimate business—it just doesn’t balance out.
Time is another thing I don’t have enough of. I work four days a week and have young children, which leaves very little room to give this business the attention it needs to grow. And the little time I do spend on Crumb Together often pulls me away from what matters most—being present as a mother and wife, and even taking care of myself.
The truth is, I’ve run out of passion, energy, time, and money to keep Crumb Together going.
So, after this Christmas season, Crumb Together will be closing its doors as a cookie business.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the love and support over the past five years.
Love, music & cookies,
Sammy
