THE BREAD SPOT IS BECOMING DONNELLY’S BAKEHOUSE
Same owners. Same crew. Same bakery.
Just a name that finally reflects the journey.
On the 22nd of February 1999, Kellie and I took over The Bread Spot with our 13-month-old son Tighe beside us. We were 24 years old, full of nerves, excitement and probably a little bit too much confidence.
What many people may not know is that long before we owned the bakery, I worked here as a teenager for the original owners, Carol and Hector, who built the bakery from the ground up when this part of Langwarrin was still largely paddocks and new shops. Back then there was a video store nearby, a small doctor’s surgery and a very different feel to the area.
Since the bakery first opened, there have only ever been two owners.
When we took over in 1999, we kept the name “The Bread Spot” because we didn’t want to upset customers or change something people already knew and trusted. As the years rolled on, the bakery grew far beyond anything we imagined. What started as a small local bakery became our life’s work.
Over the years, the bakery became part of our entire family’s life. Kellie’s mum spent many years working beside us in the bakery and became a familiar face to so many customers. After losing her a few years ago, the support and kindness shown to our family by staff, customers and the local community was something we will never forget.
Over the last 27 years we’ve watched kids grow into adults, then come back in with children of their own. We’ve employed so many wonderful staff members who became part of the extended bakery family. Some stayed for months, some for many years, but all helped shape what the bakery became.
This business has never just been about bread, pies or cakes to us. It’s been about people, routine, community, friendships and relationships built over decades. The kind where customers become familiar faces, then friends, then part of your life story.
Our daughter Shelby has grown up working in the bakery while completing university, and even Tighe had his time helping Dad on the nightshift years ago between baseball commitments. The bakery has been woven through every chapter of our family’s life.
After nearly three decades, it finally feels like the right time for the bakery name to reflect the family behind it.
So while The Bread Spot name will slowly disappear, the heart of the bakery won’t be changing at all.
To every customer, staff member, supplier and local family who has supported us over the years — thank you. You helped build this with us.
We’re incredibly proud of what this bakery has become, and excited for the next chapter.
Welcome to Donnelly’s Bakehouse.
