We’ve been a little quiet on the ‘socials’ while we’ve busily been getting some jobs done in the last few weeks. We have almost finished weaning this year’s calves and I don’t think we are far off our first frost either, with the weather dropping into the single digits over night- time to get the fire cranking!
I thought I’d share a few photos from the last week 📸

First up is the shot of the beautiful Bunya Mountains. It’s always good for the soul to spend a few minutes appreciating the view, especially when life gets busy! 😌

Can you spot the little Bettong in the second photo? These little marsupials are super cute and pretty good at camouflage! They have the most gorgeous little round ears and a prehensile tail which they use to carry grass and other items to build their nests! 🦘

The third photo is some of our “weaner” calves. These are the calves born last year who now old enough to be weaned from their mums. We use this opportunity to work on their ‘education’ - or calf kindy! - learning how to quietly and safely move together through the yards and walk in a group, which makes future mustering and cattle work safer and easier for animals and humans. 🐮

And the last picture is just a little video of driving the calves to their new paddock. 🚚

Hope you enjoyed this little look at some of what we have been up to :) Have a great weekend everyone! 🤠

Some of you may remember little Frank, a rejected twin who became our bottle fed or “Poddy” calf late last year. (photo 1)

He quickly got the hang of feeding from a bottle and in no time at all he was thriving! He grew very well and before we knew it he was growing little horns (!) and learning to drink from a bucket. (Photo 2).

Frank has been a fantastic lawn mower around the house yard, and has turned into a pretty solid little ‘grass puppy’! 😂 But after demolishing two shrubs in the last two days, and becoming a bit too bossy and pushy when he insists on more feed, it’s time for him to be weaned and be a “real” calf!

I will admit I am a bit of a softie, and I was a bit worried the others calves we put him in with would pick on him! But before too long they started checking each other out and he seemed to be making friends (photo 3, 4, 5).

Soon, they were all running around together kicking their heels in the air and getting stuck into some hay. I dropped in to check on him tonight (photo 6) and while he still came over for a quick pat, he quickly went back to join the others. I think it’s safe to say he has integrated well into his new crew! 🐮

We really enjoyed the rain we had in March but we do have a bit of flood fencing and crossings to fix!

Photo 1: it’s a bit hard to see in this photo but the mess of branches in the middle of the tree includes fence posts and wire wrapped in flood debris.

Photo 2: The fence has been pulled out from the top of the creek bank on this side all the way to where the long grass starts on the other side of the bank.

Photo 3: You can see some of the wire here, wrapped in flood debris, and if you look closely you may be able to see a couple of star pickets that got pulled out with the fence line.

Photo 4: It took this dam 10 years to fill after it was dug out, so there is a fence line going through the back part of the inlet from the paddock above it - I think we will keep the electric fence disconnected here for a little while longer lol

We finally got to empty the last of the rain gauges after last week’s rain! While we have plenty of fences and creek crossings to repair, the rain was much needed and has kicked off some beautiful new pasture growth which will put us in a good place going into winter. 🐮

It’s almost time to wean and the calves and their mums are looking good and enjoying the green pick. 🌱

I took the dogs for their afternoon walk and despite the overcast sky we still managed to snag some golden afternoon sunshine. Not a bad way to end the weekend! 🐕
