THE INVISIBLE SLIMY MONSTER IN THE WATER BOWL

Ever rub your fingers on the inside of your pet's water bowl and you feel a slippery slime of sorts? Well that invisible goo is called Biofilm.

Biofilm is a collection of organic and inorganic, living and dead materials collected on a surface. It is made up of many different types of bacteria bound together in a thick substance that acts as a glue to both hold the bacteria together and adhere it to a surface.

Biofilm can often be good bacteria but there is also the bad!

Biofilms provide a safe haven for organisms like Listeria, E. coli and legionella where they can reproduce to levels where contamination of products passing through that water becomes inevitable.

Bad Biofilms have been found to be involved in a wide variety of microbial infections in the body such as urinary tract infections, middle-ear infections and bladder infections.

Many pet parents are guilty of simply refilling the water bowl over and over without a wash and this becomes a wonderful environment for biofilm to soak around in.

How to reduce Biofilm:

Remember to clean your pet’s water bowl at least once a week if you can and change water daily.

For pet daycares where a host of different bacteria float around in water bowls, wash daily!

For best results, run your water bowls through a hot cycle in the dishwasher with an eco friendly, non-toxic soap to really clean out the biofilm!

(P.S. - I am going to get lambasted over the "wash once a week at least" concept. However, after a wonderful discussion with a well known pro-active veterinarian/scientist, when she studied the bacteria looming in pets' water bowls she found if you have a healthy beast, biofilm can actually be full of wonderful, healthy bacteria. It's like playing in the mud as kids and having good bacteria all over you! So sometimes cleaning regularly can wash all the good stuff away. ;) )

ONE OF THE WORLD'S OLDEST PIT BULLS!

The average life expectancy of a healthy pit bull is around 12 years🐶, however with the breed’s social stigmas and risk factors many sadly don’t make it that long. So when we came across Tigger, a 22 year old pit bull in Waco, Texas, we knew we had to find out more about her for our book, The Forever Dog.🐾

One of the most important factors according to longevity experts is stress, particularly in the home. As a rescue/foster-mom, Julie Morriss had many dogs in and out of her home so “in our house everyone has to have a calm state of mind”. Like many of the other long-lived dogs we met, Tigger was an easy-going and calm dog, and spent most of her days accompanying Julie throughout her day.🚙 And though she was raised mostly on kibble, Tigger always had some sort of fresh food shared with her throughout her life. 🥦🍓🥩

IS YOUR DOG’S COAT DRY & DULL? SHE MAY BE MISSING THIS IMPORTANT BRAIN-PROTECTING FAT FROM THEIR DIET!🥑🐶

Often a poor or dull hair coat is a sign of insufficient healthy fat or consumption of low-quality fats. Including raw, unprocessed fats in your pet’s diet is important for general health. One type of these “good” fats are monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), also known as omega-9s or “oleic acid”. Avocados are chock-full of oleic acid (also found in olive oil 🫒), and also loaded with folate, and vitamins B and E, all of which help support healthy skin. Adding a small amount of avocado to your dog’s diet is a good way to provide them with the healthy fats needed to maintain healthy skin and coat, but studies show may also help protect and improve brain function!🧠

Research finds MUFAs help protect a group of brain cells called astrocytes. Astrocytes are not only important for normal brain function, they also help repair and regenerate nerve cells that have been damaged due to toxins or inflammation. In a 2012 animal study, MUFA’s improved the brain’s ability to control muscles in animals that had impaired mobility due to damaged astrocytes. In addition, these cells play a key role in driving the master circadian clock in the brain. Protecting these brain cells is vital for your dog’s nervous system and circadian rhythm (the sleep-wake cycle).☀️🌑

This green fruit also boasts significant amounts of vitamin C and potassium, plus a lot of pre-biotic fiber for a healthy gut! And emerging research shows that avocados, rich in the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, also benefits eye and joint health. With a whole list of health benefits, it’s clear why this fruit is considered one of the most powerful superfoods!

How avocados got a bad rap with pets:
1. the pits are choking hazard: don’t offer whole avocados to dogs
2. the skin and pit of avocados contain a substance called persin that can cause GI upset for your whole family (2 and 4 legged), so don’t feed your family these parts these inedible parts. Avocado flesh is safe and healthy for you and your dog (click the link in the comments👇 to read the latest safety study and watch our FB live about the topic).

👉HOW TO FEED: Remove the pit, skin and stem. Mix a small amount of avocado flesh in with your dog’s food, use the cubed fruit as training treats, or smear a wedge the size of an orange slice approximately 1 ounce (40 calories), for every 40 pounds of pooch onto a lick mat daily.

Cancer is considered the leading cause of sickness and death in dogs. In fact, when it comes to the golden retriever, one study found that 68.3% of golden retrievers were diagnosed with some form of cancer and 65.0% of golden retrievers had a death attributable to cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, approximately 6 million new cancer diagnoses are made in dogs each year. “Since not all pets receive medical care or a definitive cancer diagnosis, this number likely would rise if every pet saw a veterinarian annually.” 📈- AAHA

One of the world's most extensively researched and promising natural compounds for cancer treatment is a medicinal herb that so desperately needs to be incorporated into our pets’ lives. 🌿 That herb is turmeric root. Studies show that cooking some foods at high heat results in the formation of more than ten to hundred times of new AGEs in foods. Processed canned and kibble dog food may contain significantly high levels of these AGEs. Animal and human studies show dietary AGEs result in increased oxidative stress, inflammation, and potentially organ damage, with more than half of absorbed AGEs bound in the liver and kidney. Accumulation of AGEs in the body over time may be a significant contributor of aging. Curcumin has been shown to not only protect the body from AGE’s damage but may also inhibit the formation of AGEs in the body.
