Nice work Lachie! Molanco 🫛

Lachie Moloney trialled faba beans for the first time 2 years ago to add resilience to his family’s property near Tullamore, central NSW.

The Diverse Farms demonstration trial on Lachie’s family farm is part of GRDC’s Southern NSW Farming Systems Project. The project is led by CSIRO with co-investment from NSW Agriculture.

Diverse Farms aims to validate small-plot research by comparing a faba bean/canola/wheat/barley rotation with a canola/wheat/barley sequence. It also seeks to identify barriers to on-farm adoption.

Lachie’s adviser, Dan Sweeney from Baker Ag Advantage, says faba beans can fix 300 to 350 kg/ha of nitrogen, with 200 to 250 kg/ha removed in grain, leaving 50 to 100 kg/ha of legacy soil nitrogen.

Besides biological nitrogen fixation, Lachie hopes a faba bean/canola double break will help reduce crown rot pressure and enable better annual ryegrass management without compromising farm profit over 4 years.

🎯 Canola trial in the ground last week, just in time for the rain ☔️
🎉 We’re excited to be heading into year 2 of our canola systems trial. We are continuing to assess variety performance in the Central West.
💡 Fertiliser rate responses have been added to the site this season. 👀
Stay tuned!

Where has the last few months gone!! 🏎️💨

Baker Ag hosted our 2026 pre-season grower meeting a few weeks ago. It was a great opportunity to catch up, share ideas and have some valuable discussion around the season ahead.

Some great discussions were had around some key topics:

🌾 Nutritional decision making processes when
supply is tight
🌧️ Levers we can pull when assessing our sowing moisture and PAW
📱 how we can use technology and record keeping to increase efficiency

Hoping the skies decide to cooperate with us soon ☔️

The diverse farms field day was excellent with Grassroots Agronomy and thanks to all who attended. BAA manage two sites in the Tullamore and Burcher region that is an extension from the Farming Systems work done by John Kirkegaard and CSIRO.
This work has been pivotal in gaining data and insight of how our rotation and crop choice can have such an impact on the farming system regarding nutrition, w**d management and overall success.
We’re excited to see what data we receive from these sites in the coming years that will aid in making more informed decisions in the paddock 📝 🌱

Thanks for all the help, support and input to Grassroots Agronomy, CSIRO, John Kirkegaard and their teams 👏🏼

Thanks to all that attended our Canola Trial Walk last week. There were insightful discussions and observations around varietal performance, herbicide efficacy, and how we can get the most out of our canola farming systems. Some serious tractor hours by Dan to get the site looking good!!
