A Farewell After 50 Memorable Years

It is with great regret that we announce the closure of La Torre Bakery after 50 wonderful years of service as one of the oldest cake shops in Sydney. This past Christmas marked our final day, and breaking the news during the festive season brought tears to several of our loyal customers. Many of you have built deep connections with La Torre over the decades, making this decision all the more bittersweet.

We are profoundly grateful to all our customers, including those now in their third generation of patronage. La Torre has been part of countless family celebrations across Sydney, NSW, and beyond, providing traditional South American baked goods that brought joy to your homes. Some customers who ordered their wedding cakes from us returned to purchase cakes for their grandchildren—a testament to the lifelong bonds we’ve built with you.

During weekdays, it wasn’t uncommon to see customers traveling from Bathurst, the Central Coast, and Wollongong just to visit us. Sometimes, we even sent our croissants and cakes to various parts of Australia. Hearing your stories about our food’s role in your lives was one of our greatest joys. Our oldest and dearest customer, Pedro’s mother, ordered from us regularly up to the age of 104—a memory we will cherish forever.

Before COVID-19, we had the privilege of being featured on food safaris, food tours, and the SBS show Good Food Guide. We were humbled to be a part of many media highlights and to welcome visitors seeking a taste of traditional South American flavors.

However, in recent years, challenges have made it impossible to continue. Changes to our lease meant losing essential storage and freezer facilities, drastically reducing our production capacity & almost double rent increase for the same space. Losing many customers during Covid, rising supplier costs, demographic shifts in Fairfield, and regular vandalism outside the store—such as cleaning up urine around our back door almost daily further strained us. Combined with ongoing health issues, we were left with no choice but to close our beloved bakery.
What we will treasure most are the relationships we’ve built and the countless memories created within our doors. For many South Americans La Torre was their go to for family celebrations. It was not unusual for customers to reunite with long-lost friends during visits, and the stories shared with us over the years will remain in our hearts forever.

Thank you for allowing us to be part of your lives for the past half-century. You have been so much more than customers—you have been family. Though our doors have closed, the love, joy, and memories we shared will live on.

With heartfelt gratitude,
The La Torre Family
