All these cupcakes got me missing my cakes. The workload between the two is astronomical, however. While cupcakes are en masse with a focus on speed, consistency, yet individuality across them, cakes are a whole different story. None of my cakes are identical. They take hours, from design consultation, research and brainstorming, sourcing materials, sketching and planning, then the actual baking, stacking, waiting for things to cool, waiting for layers to set, colouring buttercream, and once my canvas is finally ready, actually bringing my imagined design to life. I love cakes and the canvas it presents for me, but I have grown to loathe the many hours it takes to make not one custom creation a week, but tens of. Forced creativity under capitalism, loaded upon my body's complex health needs. But then, I look back to the cakes that I have created over the years. Thousands of them, by now, made with my two hands (and some with the help and labour of others!). I love what I design, and I love that people come back to me for my creative mind.
Anyway. A few Thursday thoughts before I get hustling on baking 200ish cupcakes today for your weekend orders. Here is a cake I made in May for my beautiful friend Sarah's birthday. Sarah is the owner of the AMAZING Newtown cafe, who make vegan Palestinian food. She wanted pink and 90s! This is what I came up with. Inside is Pandan raspberry signature MLPK cake.
A final thought following on from the idea of Palestinian freedom - lockdowns are hard, but they are NOT an oppression of your freedoms. They are a health order to work together as a community to protect those most vulnerable amongst us. I'm one of those vulnerable people. So don't be a dick and don't go to a ~freedom march~ especially if you aren't fighting for the freedoms of Black, Indigenous, q***r, trans, disabled, incarcerated, marginalised and oppressed folks both here and internationally.
