Sébastien Sans Gluten
Gluten Free Review
(Leichhardt NSW)

During the Food and Hospitality Trade Show I was approached by ripping fella named Sébastien. We got chatting and he mentional me he had a celiac accredited gluten free bakery in the Sydney suburb of Leichhardt and asked if I wanted to review his 🥧’s. After researching who this legend was and realizing he’s the brains trust behind one of Sydney’s most popular and trendy bakeries I didn’t need to be asked twice.

Sebastien Sans Gluten opened in 2022 and is located at 131 Marion St, Leichhardt. Open Wednesday to Sunday, San Gluten is a French word meaning “without gluten”. Sébastien, a trained pastry chef has spent the last 25 years perfecting his craft and his passion for baking the finest selection of gluten free pastries is un-questioned.

The bakery is beautifully designed and the cabinet display is off the charts. The portion sizes of all Sébastiens products are huge particularly the ham and cheese croissant which is made with in-house honey cured ham, gruyére, maasdam cheese and cheesy bechamel, this thing was massive and weighed a tonne (tasted ridiculous as well). With all this exceptional food my eyes started wandering everywhere, so decided to get the 🥧’s out of the warmer before I got more distracted.

Two flavours to choose from “Chicken or “Beef” plus Sébastien’s 🥧 of the month. Of course I couldn’t help myself and tried all 3, but for this review i went with the beef and OMG it looked fantastic.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money - $14.95 is 100% up there I’m not gunna lie, but those who are GF will testify that the price for GF is usually higher than normal 🥧’s. Sydney prices need to be considered plus
Sébastien also uses the highest quality of ingredients and these are not cheap. Lastly this 🥧 and all the the 🥧’s sold here are a decent size which was a bonus. 8/10

2. Meat/Fill Ratio - This 🥧 was about 95% full. A couple of small air pockets here and there, but overall you would be very happy with the fill in this 🥧. 9.5/10

3. Flavour - One word excellent !! Slow cooked beef, egg plant, veggies and Sébastien’s secret sauce recipe. This 🥧 oozed flavour and every bite was glorious. The meat in particular was delicious, it was so tender as was the secret sauce. Loved it 10/10

4. Pastry - This will probably shock a few, but this pastry was easily my favourite part of this 🥧 experience. The flavour of this pastry was simply outstanding !!! Gluten free pastry has a tendency to be slightly gritty and chalky, but this pastry was buttery and full of flavour. The only negative being the bottom bake was ever so slightly underdone and this was minor. Quality pastry !!! Tasted even better 9.5/10

5. Serving Temperature - Perfect serving temp, zero issues here 10/10

Overall Rating
🥧🥧 46.5/50 🥧🥧

This was an outstanding product and hands down the best GF 🥧 I’ve ever had. The taste of the pastry will stay in my memory for a long time, it was devine. The pastry flavour was very different to anything I’ve tried before. The filling flavour was superb, the 🥧 was almost full and the serving temperature was perfect. I guarantee there will be a few “Karen” comments regarding the price. All of the pro’s have been explained in the value for money section and they far out weigh the con’s. Sébastien, you and your team have nailed this 🥧 and I cannot recommend your 🥧’s high enough. That chicken 🥧 was absolutely beautiful. Well done mate.

If your’re GF/Celiac or simply wanna try exceptional products you NEED to visit this joint. Be warned get there early particularly on weekends !! I’ve seen videos of the line, it’s massive but totally worth the wait.

Sébastien I am so greatful you bailed me up at the Trade Show, a chance meeting turned into an epic visit. Not only are you a champion fella, you’re an exceptional baker and pastry chef. You firmly believe that baking is a universal pleasure that should be enjoyed by everyone, and that’s why you started Sébastien Sans Gluten and we are so lucky you did. It was a pleasure to meet you mate, see you in Sydney soon.

The next few reviews will be from bakeries in and around the nations capital and first up will be the The Bakehouse Mitchell
so keep a eye out for this one.

As always thanks for the ongoing support and keep supporting 🇦🇺 bakeries and don’t forget to invite all your friends to the page.

Stroud Butchery
(Stroud NSW)

A couple of weeks ago i took the Y62 up to Gloucester to get the new draws and battery system put in the car. On my way up i drove through the small town of Stroud and noticed this little town had a butcher shop. After dropping the car off at Drifta I made a quick stop into that butcher shop at Stroud. The first thing I noticed was the “homemade” 🥧’s staring at me from the cabinets. I grabbed some meat introduced myself and made a time to come back later in the week and do a review.

Stroud is a small NSW country town one hour north of Newcastle. It’s heritage-rich town famous as Australia's oldest surviving "company town". Founded in 1826 by the Australian Agricultural Company (AACo), it is celebrated for its well-preserved colonial architecture, convict-built underground silos on Silo Hill, and its quirky annual Stroud Brick and Rolling Pin Throwing Competition.

Stroud Butchery is located right in the centre of town and is owned and operated by local legends Mick and Tash. This powerhouse couple bought the business one week after lockdown took place back in 2020 and at that time the world was in chaos and potentially looked very bleak. 6 years later they have taken this business to the next level, now employing 7 staff that includes two apprentices. Matt their 2nd year apprentice recently won the 2026 “Meat Stock Butcher Wars” apprentice of the year !! What a champion effort.

The selection of meat here is super impressive and the cabinet display cannot be faulted. The meat was awesome, but I came back for these epic 🥧’s and I couldn’t wait to get started.

Mick and his team have created a cracking variarty of flavours to choose from. The list includes cheese n bacon, Lamb mint and rosemary, sunday roast plus many others. There was one flavour that caught my eye and that was Mick’s famous “ steak, cheese and jalapeño” this is one of their best sellers and gee wizz it looked good.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money - $9.50 is tremendous value, considering it weighed a whopping 400 grams. This was a huge 🥧 and navigating a way to eat this ad boy was going to be tricky. 10/10

2. Meat/Fill Ratio - It was so full it was bursting out the top. Nothing more to say but excellent fill ratio 10/10

3. Flavour - The flavour in this 🥧 was super impressive. 14 hour slow cooked beef, cheese, and jalapeño. The meat was cooked to perfection and melted in your mouth. What I did like was the cheese and jalapeño ratios combine beautifully. The jalapeños while clearly evident wasn’t hot enough to scare you away. The dark gravy sauce gave this 🥧 some added flavour Overall the team has done a wonderful job with this one. 9/10

4. Pastry - The most impressive part of this pastry was the structure and stability. As mentioned earlier, this was a heavy 🥧 and went tipped upside down it didn’t move a bit. The color and shape were also on point and were the bakes. The pastry tasted great as well which was a real bonus 8/10

5. Serving Temperature - Perfect serving temp, zero issues here 10/10

Overall Rating
🥧🥧 47/50 🥧🥧

Mick and his team have done a sterling job with this 🥧. In fact all the 🥧’s i sampled that day (there was a few 😂) were all fantasic. The size of these things will get your attention straight away and if you’re not impressed by the size, you’re gonna be blown away by the flavour. The slow cooked beef was beautiful and couldn’t be faulted. This was an impressive 🥧 and one I would have again in a heart beat. Great job team well done.

This was a cracking butcher shop and a must visit. The steak and sausages i had later that night was also phenomenal. It’s so great to see more butcher shops making and selling 🥧’s and you won’t be disappointed with these one.

To Mick & Tash thank you so much for getting back to me and allowing me to share you 🥧 journey. The blood, sweat and tears you have put into this place is massive and you deserve every success that comes your way. Your cabinet display is stunning and the service is second to none. Your also creating employment opportunities for the next generation of butchers. This was a cracking and un-expected review and i cannot wait to get back to Stroud and smash more of your amazing 🥧’s.

Later in the week we have a Gluten Free review and this is from the legendary Sebastien Sans Gluten bakery in the Sydney suberb of Leichhardt. This one was a absolute ripper so keep a eye out for this one.

As always thanks for the ongoing support and keep supporting 🇦🇺 bakeries and don’t forget to invite all your friends to the page.

Pyney’s 🥧 Reviews
The Brooky Pie
(Brookvale NSW)

With the upcoming Food and Hospitality Trade Show I decided to stay around Sydney for the next week and visit a few local bakeries and 🥧 shops. I mainly concentrated on the Northern Beaches area. I have visited quite a few bakeries and 🥧 shops around the northern beaches, but have missed the odd one here and there. One of these is the brooky pie located on Pittwater Road Brookvale.

This is Sea Eagle territory through and through and the bakery is a short stroll from the famous Brookvale Oval. The bakery has been open since 1990, and current owner Eddy has been here for just over 7 years.

Open 6 days a week (mon - sat) the bakery is small but extremely well presented. The place is spotless, has indoor seating and a impeccable cabinet display. The walls are decorated with pictures dating back to the shops early days and paying homage to the founding owners and that was pretty awesome to see. After chatting to a couple of fellow 🥧 punters in the shop it was time to get started and check out the menu.

There is a huge selection of flavours on offer and it’s a menu that will cater for everyone. The range is quite impressive and choosing a 🥧 was going to be difficult. After having a quick glance one flavour that caught my attention straight away and that was the “Beef Rendang” I have reviewed a few of these over my journey’s but it’s been quite some time ago and this one looked too good to pass up.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money - I’m not going to sugar coat this $10.50 is up there in price, but this seems to be the standard price for 🥧’s on the northern beaches of Sydney. This 🥧 was a healthy 250 grams which is above industry standard. Overall still reasonable value for what you get. 7.5/10

2. Meat/Fill Ratio - About 90% full. The top bake has sunk in the middle, therefore and a smidge more could have need added 9/10

3. Flavour - Really good !! Slow cooked beef, potato’s, rendang curry and a variety of authentic mixed spices. The beef was incredibly tender and the amount of potato’s was perfect. The rendang curry is mild and will suit every curry lover. Only suggestion in my opinion is to thicken up the curry a smidge as it was a little runny. Overall well done Eddy, I really enjoyed the flavour 8/10

4. Pastry - A few things to work on which Eddy acknowledged. The color was great, as was the shape, plus there was minimal
shrinkage. The top bake while baked right through had sunk in the middle and pics will show this. The bottom bake and sides was soft and moist, most likely caused by sitting in the aluminum tin. This affected the stability/structure and eating this bad boy was a little tricky 6.5/10

5. Serving Temperature - Perfect serving temp, zero issues here 10/10

Overall Rating
🥧🥧 41/50 🥧🥧

Overall this was a solid product and one I would certainly have again. Really it was the bottom bake/sides that effected the pastry score. Yes $10.50 is 100% up there in price, but after visiting many bakeries this figure is around the norm for 🥧’s in and around the northern beaches of Sydney. The 🥧 was almost full and the serving temp was post on. The flavour was my favourite part. There’s something about “Rendang” curry and this one was really good. The top bake had sunk in the middle and the bottom bake also needs tweaking. The aluminum tins are making the bottom and sides sweaty, soft and this is making the stability structional integrity a little tricky. This is a easy fix which Eddy is all over. I’m glad I chose this particular flavour and as far a flavoured “Rendang” 🥧’s go this was a little ripper.

This is another 🥧 shop to add to your list. The menu is extensive, the products are fabulous and your supporting another cracking small business.

A massive thanks to Eddy for having me in, what a absolute legend. He’s kicked some serious goals since taking over and it’s been through sheer hard work. After all these years in the baking game Eddy still wants to improve his products and be the best. Throughout the review he was asking questions and taking advice and that’s what these reviews are about. It was great to meet you mate and I’m looking forward to coming back next time I’m in the area.

Stroud Butchery is the next review out later in the week. This was a unexpected visit and one I will remember for a long time. So keep a eye out for this one.

As always thanks for the ongoing support and keep supporting 🇦🇺 bakeries and don’t forget to invite all your friends to the page.
