There was a period in Australia where every bakery, milk bar, tuck shop, servo and local cafรฉ had the exact same thing sitting in the fridge.
$5-$6 Salad Rolls.
For some reason the lettuce also just felt nice and crunchy. The whole thing was simple but perfect at the same time.
These days you'd probably get charged $14.50 and be asked whether you'd like to add truffle aioli.
Back then the humble salad roll was Australia's unofficial national lunch.
And somehow every tradie, student, apprentice and office worker survived on them.
