🚗🎉 Because what's better than a sweet treat that's as classic as Dad's taste in cars?

I get a lot of requests for car cakes (3D) but I really really don't like making 3D car cakes (unless it's a cartoon style) buuuuut all is not lost.....I can still make a car themed cake for you. Winning!

To bring the cost down, this car is an edible image. Just because I prefer to paint them myself doesn't mean everyone wants the extra cost that handpainting adds. Still looks great though right?

Before & After - How did I make these? 👇

The chicken:
- make cake pop style mix. Crumble leftover cake and mix with icing of your choice. I use chocolate ganache
- the "bone" is just a chocolate finger biscuit
- get a spoonful of the mixture and squish it to one end of the biscuit to make the thick end of the chicken leg.
- do the same for the smaller end to make the knuckle
- refrigerate to set

To coat:
- get your set legs from the fridge and rember NOT to hold them from the 'bone' or the small end as its only a biscuit holding that weight and it'll break. (Yep, I broke one doing just this).
- crush some corn flakes into a container (just use your clean hands)
- for best coverage, coat your chicken pieces in a generous amount of icing (I use ganache) as the corn flakes need something to stick to.
- set aside and refrigerate to set

Once set:
- colour your chicken using edible food colours.
- my airbrush isn't working very well right now so I just put some brown petal dust and rose spirit in a small spray bottle.

ALL DONE!

To attach my chicken to the cake I used white chocolate ganache.

A BLANK CANVAS - these plain fondant covered cakes can be the hardest....why? Because it has to be perfect. No bubbles, dints, folds or elephant skin, as there's no decorations going on the cake to cover those imperfections. No matter how my cakes are decorated I always aim for a flawless finish. It's just good practice.

It's been very wet and humid in Qld lately so Ive had the air con on dry setting to stop the fondant getting sweaty or wilting. My 1st attempt at covering this cake was resulting in elephant skin on the whole bottom portion of the cake (where the outer layer of the fondant is starting to dry out). I had to rip that fondant off, turn the air con off for 10 minutes and re-kneed, roll out and recover the cake. Worked a charm. Air con went back on quickly after that.
